Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

1) In general, please specify the paper analysed   “combat Judo” competition. In Judo athletes can compete in combat and kata. The author focused in the combat Judo literature review. Even because there aren’t literature on Kata competition, but Kata competition (European, world championship and so on) are growing and more and more judokas participate, especially older judokas. Please specify it.

2) In Summary, at the beginning. instead of repeating “multi-component exercise”, to avoid repetition in the same sentence you could write: “In Increasing interest in the application of judo as a multi-component exercise has been observed, with a growing body of evidence showing that this feature improves physical activity” or similar.

3) line 87: “Judo moral code”: please add reference where prof. Kano defined the Judo Moral Code. If there are not a specific reference, please change the phrase. It seems to me that the Judo moral code was a invention of the eighties last century. IJF federation talk about it, but no direct evidence of Kano definition.

4) Line 174-175 “..while powerful actions during techniques application are needed for.. and ground techniques”: please add reference. In my experience to be successful in ne waza combat, ground techniques need precision, flexibility, and control, more than power. In fact, in my experience in Judo class for old people, Judo groundwork is favorite, more than standing work: less power, less injuries.

5) line 179: please precise it was an old analysis. Now combat match duration is about 4 minutes.

6) line 185: please add also the first original research on this field https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1260/1747-9541.9.1.185

7) line 284: please in “..fall prevention [1.13-21]” ADD “..fall prevention and fall safely [1.13-21]”  . In the cited articles, the learning to fall correctly improves the fall prevention, but also the impact of falling. Therefore, thanks to the learning of Judo Ukemi, not only the prevention, but the safe fall as a great benefit of the Judo practice.

8) Figure 2: if you want to improve the image of Judo practice for elderly population, the groundwork has to be represented. The Judo groundwork is little investigated, but no less important (physical and mental benefits). in the elderly population it has incredible benefits because is more safe and full of different exercises, thanks to an unusual but safe work surface, the tatami. adding an image pays tribute to Judo of this great potential.

9) in general, for the conclusion, my reflexion: Judo is a grappling combat sport. In grappling situation the opens skill benefit  are greater than any open skill situation, because the technical action is an action that must be totally adapted to the combination of the pair of practitioners (bound by the kumi kata), as in dance in pairs, but in opposition situation (open skill). Therefore Judo is the product of the benefits of situational sports and dance. the benefits of this aspect should be further investigated.

Author Response

To Reviewer 1:

Comment 1: In general, please specify the paper analysed “combat Judo” competition. In Judo athletes can compete in combat and kata. The author focused in the combat Judo literature review. Even because there aren’t literature on Kata competition, but Kata competition (European, world championship and so on) are growing and more and more judokas participate, especially older judokas. Please specify it.

Response: Thank you for your valuable suggestion. According to your suggestion, I have added information about these matters (P1, Lines 35–43; P2, Line 70).

Comment 2: In Summary, at the beginning. instead of repeating “multi-component exercise”, to avoid repetition in the same sentence you could write: “In Increasing interest in the application of judo as a multi-component exercise has been observed, with a growing body of evidence showing that this feature improves physical activity” or similar.

Response: I have done (P1, Line 12).

Comment 3: line 87: “Judo moral code”: please add reference where prof. Kano defined the Judo Moral Code. If there are not a specific reference, please change the phrase. It seems to me that the Judo moral code was a invention of the eighties last century. IJF federation talk about it, but no direct evidence of Kano definition.

Response: I re-searched the literature on judo moral code. However, I could not find any papers with clear evidence. Thus, I have changed this sentence (P3, Lines 89–93).

Comment 4: Line 174-175 “..while powerful actions during techniques application are needed for.. and ground techniques”: please add reference. In my experience to be successful in ne waza combat, ground techniques need precision, flexibility, and control, more than power. In fact, in my experience in Judo class for old people, Judo groundwork is favorite, more than standing work: less power, less injuries.

Response: Thank you for your suggestion. I added the reference and changed this sentence (i.e., removed mention of ground techniques) (P4, Line 171–P5, Line 172).

Comment 5: line 179: please precise it was an old analysis. Now combat match duration is about 4 minutes.

Response: Thank you for pointing out an important point. I have corrected that sentence (P5, Lines 175–176).

Comment 6: line 185: please add also the first original research on this field https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1260/1747-9541.9.1.185

Response: As you suggested, I cited this paper (reference number 49) (P5, Line 183).

Comment 7: line 284: please in “..fall prevention [1.13-21]” ADD “..fall prevention and fall safely [1.13-21]”  . In the cited articles, the learning to fall correctly improves the fall prevention, but also the impact of falling. Therefore, thanks to the learning of Judo Ukemi, not only the prevention, but the safe fall as a great benefit of the Judo practice.

Response: As you suggested, I have corrected this sentence (P6, Line 275).

Comment 8: Figure 2: if you want to improve the image of Judo practice for elderly population, the groundwork has to be represented. The Judo groundwork is little investigated, but no less important (physical and mental benefits). in the elderly population it has incredible benefits because is more safe and full of different exercises, thanks to an unusual but safe work surface, the tatami. adding an image pays tribute to Judo of this great potential.

Response: Thank you for your valuable suggestion. I have added the image of the groundwork in Figure 2 (P12, Figure 2).

Comment 9: in general, for the conclusion, my reflexion: Judo is a grappling combat sport.

Response: Following your suggestion, I have added these matters (P4, Lines 123–127).

Reviewer 3 Report

I enjoyed reading the interesting article entitled "Benefits of Judo Training for Brain Functions Related to Physical and Cognitive Performance in Older Adults" as a reviewer. I hope it will be taken into consideration by the readers.

It is suggested to remove part a and b in figure one.

Many parentheses in the entire text cause the reader's mind to scatter, especially those written in two languages. Please move words written in Asian languages to the footnotes. Subtract from the number of parentheses.

Change the shape of table one. Refer to similar articles for the format template.

Comment 1: It is suggested to remove part a and b in figure one.

Response: I have done (P3, Figure 1).

Comment 2: Many parentheses in the entire text cause the reader's mind to scatter, especially those written in two languages. Please move words written in Asian languages to the footnotes. Subtract from the number of parentheses.

Response: Thank you for your suggestion. I made a footnote about Japanese and reduced the parenthesis (P13, Lines 409–418).

Comment 3: Change the shape of table one. Refer to similar articles for the format template.

Response: I have already created the table using the Encyclopedia journal template, so this time I have not changed the table. I consulted with the journal office about this matter, and received the table should not be revised.
