Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article titled "New Perspectives on Quaternary Paleogeography of Coastal Ecuador and Its Relationships with Climate Change" provides valuable insights into the paleogeographic and climatic evolution of the coast of the Jaramijó canton in coastal Ecuador. The authors employ stratigraphic, biological, and geochemical analyses to reconstruct the region's history and shed light on the impact of climate change.

The study also addresses the erosion rates of the cliffs and wave-cut platforms at the Jaramijó site, estimating them to be in the range of 1.1 to 2.4 meters per year. It is worth noting that these erosion rates could potentially increase when considering mathematical models projecting a sea-level rise scenario of approximately +1 to +1.4 meters by 2100.

In conclusion, "New Perspectives on Quaternary Paleogeography of Coastal Ecuador and Its Relationships with Climate Change" provides valuable insights into the paleogeographic and climatic evolution of coastal Ecuador. The integration of various analytical approaches and the identification of paleo sea-cliffs, paleo-coastal cliffs, and erosion rates contribute significantly to our understanding of past and future changes in this coastal region. The findings presented in the article have implications for coastal management and the assessment of climate-related hazards in Ecuador and other similar coastal areas worldwide. Even so, the manuscript needs to improve some aspects such as its English, among others that you will find in the attached

Dear Expert Reviewer,

As authors of the manuscript “New perspectives on quaternary paleogeography of coastal Ecuador and its relationships with climate change”, we appreciated a lot your suggestions and comments on the document, as we are certain and convinced, that they have been useful to enrich the fluency and clarity of the entire article. Within the edited version, we included all kind of detailed changes made and you will be able to find them all exposed and answered since the responses to each suggestion and comments are given in colored (edited) style. Unfortunately, the proposed recommendations and or changes within the two first figures were not possible, as it would require a major redesigning with minimum improvement of almost no visible value, sorry for that. However, we confirm that the writing in English has been thoroughly reviewed and accordingly improved, where needed. Once again and with all due respect, we are very thankful for your comments and corrections, which helped to see a few unclear parts and or even faults of our side within our manuscript. With your comments we were able to smooth the text, clarify missing parts or wrong spellings, which resulted to a much better than the initial version of this current study. Thanks a lot on behalf of all authors

Reviewer 2 Report

The  paper " New perspectives on quaternary paleogeography of coastal 2 Ecuador and its relationships with climate change" investigates the Late Quaternary coastal dynamics in the Jamarijò area through a multidisciplinary approach.

The paper is well organised and both the sedimentological, micropalaeontological and geochemical analyses. The sediment sampling strategy on the offshore and the reconstruction thought interpolation is very innovative.

The reconstruction of the coastline and the identification of several marine terraces is very important data for the area, but by correlating with palaeoclimatic data and the interaction with tectonic.

The figures in the manuscript are well organised and support the comprehension of the text.

I recommend the publication of the paper in this form.

The English text is comprehensible in general.

Some sentences in the methods and results are slightly unclear.

However, they do not affect the quality of the paper

Review of "New perspectives on quaternary paleogeography of coastal 2 Ecuador and its relationships with climate change"

This study uses C14 dating, paleo-topographic analysis and sedimentary characteristics of sediments to reconstruct paleogeography of coastal Ecuador and discuss paleo climate changes. The study is generally well organized and well written. The scientific aim is clear. I suggest accept after minor revision.

Minor comment: Please state clearly sea-level changes during MIS 3 in coastal Ecuador in abstract and in conclusion, and compare the sea-level changes in Ecuador with those of other places in the world.

Good luck with revision.

The English is generally good.
