Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper examines the relationships between the relationship between the need of belonging and five personal appraisals under different belongingness-conditions. The appraisals that are studied are appraisals of exclusion, shame, social-worthiness, emotional self- expression, and prosocial-relating behaviour. The authors outline very clearly the theoretical background and the design of the study. The empirical findings are accordingly referenced and well discussed in the context of the existing literature.

Overall, it is very well written paper and I have just a few suggestions to the authors. In particular, you can add a comment in the text if gender and age were included in the models as control variables and what are their effects. In terms of cultural differences, it is also interesting to know if the descriptive results or some initial variants of the models showed an indication for such an influence. You may also describe in a short paragraph how you modelled the mediational effects. It would very informative for the readers who are slightly familiar with mediation/moderation analysis.
