Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Document Type : Review

Document Title:  “Gravitational surface vortex formation and suppression control: 2 A review from hydrodynamic characteristics”

Summary:

The Authored reviewed six hydrodynamic characteristics and three detection  and control procedures of the Gravitational surface vortices.

This review article provides some sort of comprehensive references for surface-vortex ang highlighted some future investigation tracks.

Minor Comments:

Add citation for figure-1

Lin3 90-91 not clear sentence

Conclusion:

The current research suitable for publishing  after amending the above mentioned minor comments

Author Response

Thanks for your helpful advice and positive comments. We investigate the gravitational surface vortex formation and suppression control. We hope our research works can a helpful reference for fluid-induced vibration detection and provide a technical solution for hydropower energy conversion. We would improve the manuscript continuously, and wish it could match the publication requirements of Processes.

1) Add citation for figure-1

Response: We have add the citation for figure 1.

2) Lin3 90-91 not clear sentence

Response: We have revise the sentence. Andersen [53] investigated the dynamic evolution characteristics of the Ekman layer, and found the Ekman upwelling flow phenomenon. Chen [54] obtained single-celled structures with upwelling zones, and found the fluid particle moved to the center nozzle via the Ekman layer [53], as shown Figure 2.

Reviewer 2 Report

The scientific article "Gravitational surface vortex formation and suppression control: A review from hydrodynamic characteristics" is devoted to the actual problem of the energy-conversion stability of hydropower in the operation of pumped-storage power plants.

The paper title clearly describes the content of the work. The paper is well-written and the quality of the figures is acceptable. The paper is interesting with some valuable conclusions and is recommended for possible publication in Processes journal.

Authors have conducted an investigation for hydropower plants in essential hydrodynamic properties, such as Elkman layer transport, heat/mass transfer, pressure pulsations, and vortex-induced vibration, and they noted some significant scientific issues as well as future research direction and opportunities.

1.It is difficult to identify the problem from the abstract.

2. What is the application of this work? What investigations need to be done first of all? The authors should present the key contribution of this manuscript clearly and illustrate the importance of this study.

3. Briefly talk about the result and the implication of the result in the abstract. The Abstract needs to be enhanced. It has to address briefly and describe the aim, object, procedure, results, and important findings of novelty accordingly.

4. More citations are needed.

In general, I think the manuscript can be accepted in its present form with minor changes.

1) It is difficult to identify the problem from the abstract.

Response: Thanks for your careful reading and beneficial advice. We have revised the abstract again. The energy-conversion stability of hydropower is critical to satisfy the growing demand for electricity. In low-head hydropower plants, a gravitational surface vortex is easily generated, which causing irregular shock vibrations that damage turbine performance and input-flow stability. The gravitational surface vortex is a complex fluid dynamic problem with high nonlinear features.

2) What is the application of this work? What investigations need to be done first of all? The authors should present the key contribution of this manuscript clearly and illustrate the importance of this study.

Response: Thanks for your careful reading and beneficial advice. We have add the application of this work in the abstract.  The relevant result can offer a helpful reference for fluid-induced vibration detection and provide a technical solution for hydropower energy conversion.

3) Briefly talk about the result and the implication of the result in the abstract. The Abstract needs to be enhanced. It has to address briefly and describe the aim, object, procedure, results, and important findings of novelty accordingly.

Response: Thanks for your careful reading and beneficial advice. Our study provides a broad view of gravitational surface vortices and summarizes several key directions for future research, so as to provide guidance for relevant researchers.

4) More citations are needed.

Response: We have add some references.
