Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors provide an overview of the current state of the evolution of massive stars, nucleosynthesis and core-collapse supernova explosions. They summarize the pre-supernova evolution, focusing on the uncertainties in stellar evolution that affect simulations of supernova explosions and, subsequently, the products of nucleosynthesis. They focus in more detail on the explodability problem. In conclusion, the authors present the perspectives of the future multi-dimensional simulations, which will enable to investigate many phenomena that are currently very uncertain.

It is a well written work. It can be read with understanding even for a non-specialist reader. The credibility and comprehensiveness of the article text is supported by a very extensive set of references. I found only a few minor points to correct (see below).

I found only a few minor things to correct in the whole article:
- Figure 7: Add units for the y1-axis (left) and labels for the y2-axis (right). What do the gray belts represent? (also in
  Figure 9).
- Figure 8: ".., O solid green line)" -> ".., O (solid green line)"

Therefore, I recommend the manuscript for publication as it is.

Referee 1:

we added the missing information in the caption. T9 does not require units because it is the temperature in units of 1.e9 K. For clarity, we included this definition also in the figure caption.

2. - Figure 8: ".., O solid green line)" -> ".., O (solid green line)"
We corrected the typo.

This paper reviewed the explosion mechanism and explosive nucleosynthesis of core-collapse supernovae. The article is interesting and easily readable. I would recommend a revised version for publication if the authors address two minor comments:

 1) The nucleosynthesis from central engines, i.e., outflows from black hole neutrino-dominated accretion disks or winds from magnetars, should be briefly reviewed if possible. 

2) Different codes of core-collapse supernovae should be briefly commented.

1. The nucleosynthesis from central engines, i.e., outflows from black hole neutrino-dominated accretion disks or winds from magnetars, should be briefly reviewed if possible. 
We included an additional subsection (5.3 in the revised version) to briefly discuss the nucleosynthesis from neutrino interactions close to the PNS. 

2. Different codes of core-collapse supernovae should be briefly commented.
We listed the most popular CCSNe codes in section 3.6, providing a brief description.
