Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

(1)A diagram is strongly encouraged to show the possible mechanism for the improving of the water resistance by different approaches.

(2)Digital pictures of the latex coating are encouraged to provide to show the macro surface appearance and the improving of the water resistance.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors have offered a thorough and scientifically sound presentation of a method for imparting hydrophobicity to latex coatings. Overall just a few formatting and grammatical corrections are noted.

·       Grammar and spelling edits are required

·       Suggest some changes to phrasing and sentence structure. Here are some examples:

o   Line 30 – “…were evaluated from the point of view of…” might sound better as “…were evaluated with focus on water absorption…”.

o   Lines 31-35 – Sentence is very long and uses forms of the word polymer four times making it a little confusing. Perhaps splitting this into two statements and rephrasing it will make it flow better.

o   Lines 48-50 – Remove the second “for” and add “of” between “comprising standards”.

o   Lines 85-87 – Change the denotions (i)(ii)(iii)(iiii) to (I) (II) (III) (IV) or (A) (B) (C) (D) for readability.

o   Table 1 – Add a little space between the Chemical Composition statements.

o   Line 120 – 1/1 to 1:1 – This may be a preference based on regional writing styles

o   Line 124 – Spell out approximately 5 °C (at…). – There are two periods that shouldn’t be included and the A in At is incorrectly capitalized.

·       Adjustments should be made to all tables to ensure a consistent format, ie:

o   Table 2 – Assign a letter or number to each: TFEMA/MMA/BA/MAA/DAAM/ALMA

§  Use the letter or number as a subscript behind the associated value under First Step and Second Step

o   Table 2 – “Series 1, 2, 3, 4” should be aligned the same, maybe a left alignment.

o   Table 4 - “Series 1, 2, 3, 4” should be aligned the same, maybe a left alignment.

o   Table 5 –

§  “Series 1, 2, 3, 4” should be aligned the same, maybe a left alignment.

§  Left justify the values given.

§   _– Unclear why the _ is present.

·       Line 193 – Capitalize to “Where V1…”

o   Line 215 – Capitalize the start of the sentence.

Reviewer 3 Report

The article reported some interesting results which might help the coating science in the long run. However, I have few comments for the authors.

1.     The authors should discuss the effect of fluorinated coating on the environment and compare their coating system with bio-based coating in the introduction section wrt the following references.

2. They should mention some applications of this coating in the introduction section.

3. In the methodology section, the author should cite the following references for equation 1 used to measure water absorption.

4. Water molecules tends to form hydration shell in an emulsifier. The author should discuss the probability of formation of hydration shell during polymerization reaction wrt the following articles and include them as references.
