Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Generally, authors submitted well-written paper, with excellent introduction section. Article is very transparently written, however some editorial mistakes have been found:

Line 118 - a near 1 m thick iron layer

Line 294 - 4 m thick

I understand that authors mean micrometric thickness?

I also recommend to add some microstructure of layers to article, in order to additional improvement of this paper.

Author Response

Dear Mr. Reviewer, thank you very much for your work. We added the corrections to the text. The mistakes are results of  formating symbol letters. The article was improved. Kind regards.

Reviewer 2 Report

I have several remarks to this manuscript:

  1. The authors write in the Introduction: "The objective of this work is to discuss the articles describing the formation of thin siloxane films adsorbed on the iron surface from the vapour phase published elsewhere [19-23]..... Used in the work experimental data [19-23] were published a few decades ago in different sources and the particular publication summarizes and discusses these results". Since experimental data were published and discussed 27-28 years ago, authors should indicate novelty in the proposed manuscript. Otherwise, it is not clear why the old results should be published again.
  2. What were the authors guided by when choosing sulfur dioxide as an aggressive air component? Why wasn't it hydrogen sulphide or hydrogen chloride?

iii. Line 432: "The oxygen of air passivates the surface oxide..." Please explain.

  1. The text with lacunas: 118, 120, 145, 149, 165, 166, 250, 292.

The manuscript can be published after taking into account the comments made.

Author Response

Dear Mr. Reviewer, thank you very much for your work. We did correction according to your comments. The experimental data were published in 1993 and 1994, 1999. However, at present new explanations of the properties of thin siloxane layers, the impact of the structure on corrosion protection are discussed. Thus, we believe that this article-review of old data will be intersting for the readers at present.  No so many publications in this field are exisying in the literature.

According to passivation by oxygen. The phrase was modified.

Passivating impact of oxygen is well known that preserve the stability of the iron oxide film, the film composition and the structure. This definition was added to the text.

Thank you very mush and kind regards

Reviewer 3 Report

Excellent paper. Compliment for the basic scientific work done by Professor Andrei Nazarov.

In line 187   “… is shown in Figure Before m…” seems to be number or some word missing?

In line 250: Leave a space between the cm-1 and the next word.

“cm-1corresponding to…”

In line 356: Replace “… did not observe.” by “ did not occur.” In the following sentence:

“Thin siloxane films create hydrophobic surfaces and water condensation did not observe.”
