Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Great paper, well written, original, and very inspiring. It is paper based on previous studies, presenting a new concept that will initiate new research in the future. It is one of those papers that have the potential to go seminal.

Only very minor editorial changes suggested, see attached pdf.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear authors,

herewith are my comments on the manuscript entitled “Why do bio-carbonate exist?”.

The “Phosphate Extraction Mechanism” (PEM) is here presented in order to explain the benefits of carbonate precipitation for photosynthesizing aquatic prokaryotes and algae in warm, oligotrophic, alkaline, and euphotic environments.  The aim of the manuscript is clear and the proposed hypothesis is consistently supported by the proposed references and based on an accurate discussion of already published data. Only few minor spelling errors are present and the manuscript is thus well-written and well-organized.

However, some sentences are not supported by an adequate (or not at all) number of references. Although some concepts may be considered obvious, adding more references would only result in a sensibly improvement of the quality of the paper, also considering the aim and the structure of the manuscript. See the attached file for some minor suggestions and remarks.

I suggest accepting the manuscript after minor/moderate revision.
