Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors:

- In the introduction, the high-order defects could be better presented and well-characterized

- Taking into consideration the grouping of the references, the number of cited papers is not impressive.

- Figure 1 is not cited in the Introduction and the source of the illustration should be given.  Moreover,  quarter waves (the aim of the article) are not visible in this form of a graph. It looks like the combination of accidental FEM rolling simulations with a 4-chi rolling mill.

This figure must be improved

- Figure 2 is also essential to understand the paper. It should have good quality instead of poor ones. It must be improved necessarily

- (53) "upper surface of the upper work roll"  - it is the contour of the whole roll in general

- (54) R0 - must be explained

- (63) D+H - these must be explained (I think that is roll diameter and rolling gap)

- (65) &(67) How to understand: g (L/2), g(0) -

- In addition, all remaining factors (e.g a0 ... a5, A) in formulas, should be clearly explained by the Authors as appear in text

- (72) SMS - adding "company" or "group" will be more adequate

- In general, in the whole paper, the formulas seem to be written with abnormal size fonts in relation to the body text.

- Which mathematical tool was used for calculations?

- Figure 3. Radius of the roll shape was under 1 mm? The same about crown (Fig.4).  What was the thickness of the rolled strip, rolling mill configurations, etc.? Please give more details about setup

-(133) What could be an alternative to the cosine curve?

According to the Application effect section, any experimental data were not shown or computer simulation (FEM modeling alike https://doi.org/10.1007/s00170-022-09529-x ). This section must be extended.

In relation to decreasing from 63.9% to 8.5%:

What was the method of measurement for the quater wave?

What kind of steel has been processed?

What was the thickness of the rolled strip?

Comments and specific questions requiring clarification:

1. I recommend using full names first (shortcut in bracket) and then You can use only shortcut. It refers to the shortcut: CVC roll, MVCplus roll and others.

2.      Reffers to the text between line no. 32-40: Are the problems with shape (waviness) mentioned in the introduction also occur for other steel grades or only for high-strength steels? If only for high-strength steels, please explain in more detail (add in the introduction) where they come from (what is the cause). Add this information to the text please.

3.      Reffers to the text between line no. 32-40: Do these problems occur for all plate thicknesses or only for thin plates? If only for thin sheets - please also explain why? Add this information to the text please.

4.      Is figure no. 2 is your own? If not please provide a reference to the literature. Additional explain please what kind of relationship the graph shows? What the individual symbols and axes mean? Add this information to the text please.

5.      The paper contains many equations (formulas). I recommend to add explanation of used symbols bellow equations or add a legend of used symbols at the begining or at the end of the paper. Now it is not understandable. It is necessary in my opinion.

6.      Line no. 68: What anti-symmetry are you talking about?

7.      Use larger font in legend on fig no. 6,11 and 12 please.

8.      Please add some more of theory of superposition principle if it is possible.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear Authors,

I think this paper presents useful result to improve the quarter wave problem in the hot rolling process.

For better completeness, please revise the paper with the comments as follows.

- Add the explanation of Figure 1 on the text.

- Need detailed explanation on what is the quarter wave.

- Replace the figure with better resolution quality.

- Add the description of Cq, Ch and B on Figure for better understanding.

- Application effect is too short to divide as a chapter. If you want to keep, please provide more detailed explanations and discussions.
