Reviewer 1 Report

General comment: I find this manuscript entitled “Analysis of Existing Equations for Calculating the Settling Velocity” trying to address the relevant issue and the findings are interesting. I would suggest this manuscript needs a major revision and this work can be accepted if the following corrections are made:

Comment

  1. Abstract should have statement about the research gap and focus of current study. Please revisit for better highlighting.
  2. English language need to be revised thoroughly throughout the manuscript to avoid errors. Introduction section needs to be strengthened with suggested cites: https://doi.org/10.1080/15715124.2017.1394318 ; http://www.jmaterenvironsci.com/Document/vol7/vol7_N3/94-JMES-2040-2015-Mishra.pdf ; https://doi.org/10.1007/s13201-020-01331-y ; https://doi.org/10.1007/s10668-020-00744-8 ; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.eti.2021.101405
  3. Discussion section needs revision. Interpretate each data. What is revealed from the analysed data. Explain reason of variation in related parameters data. Refer to the related articles available in literature and strengthen discussion
  4. Resolution of figures needs to be improved for better visibility to readers. Text in figures are not readable
  5. Conclusion should be reasonable. Modify and rewrite.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript reviewed fourteen existing equations is for settling velocity of particles and compared the simulation results of these methods by graphical and statistical analysis. The topic is interesting. But the method review and comparison need to be improved with detail introduction, discussion or evaluation. Please see the specified comments:

  • Now the authors listed 14 equations. It is necessary to add some details, such as background of theory, empirical or physical type, advantage and disadvantage, application limitations, and so on. These information is important for readers to choose the proper method.
  • It is not enough to guild readers to the appropriate equation by the statistical comparison alone. Each method was proposed in a specific background, so it has different advantage and applicability. Some methods are easy to use with less parameters, some are good for low settling velocity or large particle size, some are in high precision but difficult to obtain parameters. So it is better to supplement in-deep evaluations of accuracy and applicability, combining with the statistical analysis.
  • Please define the variable when it firstly appears. Such as “Sf” in line 57, Dgr in line 80, F in 73, …
  • Line 75, “with different diameter range”, what range? Please clearly specify the range or the application limitation of this equation.
  • Line 104, “Sf is the safe factor”, it is hard to know what does the safe factor indicate. So it needs more detail about this factor.
  • Lines 196-215 are the method introduction of statistical performance analysis. It is suggested to move forward to method section.
