Ionospheric Science: An Example of the Importance of Diversity in Approaches to Scientific Research
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The manuscript is well written about how the research in ionospheric science has evolved. The author has presented a good history and thereby how ionosphere science was diversified with time; which is very useful for the readers, particularly students and young researchers. The manuscript may accepted for publication.
- This manuscript is a kind of review paper on how the research in ionospheric science evolved towards inter-disciplinary and application oriented; and well written with historical references.
- The topic of the manuscript is relevant to the field, of course does not present any new scientific results, but rather discusses how the inter-disciplinary research has evolved and the research proposals were aimed at. This kind of publication is very rare in this field and useful.
- This manuscript discusses how the ionospheric science transformed from curiosity driven research to practical applications and inter-disciplinary, which is very distinct to other publications in this field. This information is very useful for the students and young researchers.
- The conclusions made the author are well supported by the references and presented arguments.
- The references given in the text are appropriate.
- The schematic figure aptly represents the current scenario

Ionospheric Science: An Example of the Importance of Diversity in Approaches to Scientific Research
by Mike Hapgood
The first quarter of the new century is characterized, on the one hand, by many scientific and technological breakthroughs, and, on the other hand, by the need to sum up the results of previous research. For example, at the URSI2021 General Assembly in Rome, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this organization, a lot of reports were presented with concrete results and a number of review articles summing up and indicating directions for future work. This paper also belongs to this category.
The paper is fully consistent with the profile of the Journal and its Special Issue: Ionospheric Monitoring and Modeling for Space Weather, which makes it possible to recommend it for publication in its present form.
A couple of noticed small inaccuracies come down to: (1) the elimination of the double phrase "alongside" in line 205 and (2) the addition of the initial Sergienko T. in reference [32].
Reviewer 3 Report
The work presents a systematic study of the past, present and future aspects of ionospheric and atmospheric sciences as well as diversity in nonlinear sciences. Specifically, it focuses on some strategic importance and developments of modern ionospheric science based on the ideas the author has developed over the years. The information may be useful to the research communities as guidelines for future development of research projects in ionospheric and atmospheric sciences. A typo is noticed in Line no 205: " alongside alongside".
