Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a nice piece of review manuscript regarding functionalization the anionic biopolymer Na-alginate. I do not have much comments regarding the content of the manuscript, but i believe that the outlook part is too simple and does not reflect the progress in this particular areas. Maybe the authors need to explore more on the currently and potential developments there.

Author Response

We have completed the “Outlook section” of the manuscript by adding future perspectives in the following areas:

  • progress in analytical and characterization techniques
  • application of new techniques, including microfluidics, 3D and 4D printing for the production of smart hydrogels
  • perspectives in the domain of drug development including the use of mini-organs for high throughput screening.

These modifications are included in p.18-19 of the revised manuscript, as well as additional references: 116 to 121.

Reviewer 2 Report

This is a nice review, which I consider very useful for researchers working in the field of biopolymers and specially with alginate. I like the structure of the review and how all the methods are described. I recommend the publication of this article after crosschecking the quality of the figures to make sure they are provided with the highest possible quality (the quality of some figures is very bad in my PDF, but I am not sure if the problem derived from the automatic PDF building tool or because the image is low quality).

Author Response

We have completed a revision of the English language and brought corrections which are highlighted in yellow in the revised version of the manuscript.

We have checked for the quality of the figures. The figures submitted in the zip file are all of good quality. It seems that pdf transformation might have altered the quality of some figures.
