Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Editor,

Please find my review of a manuscript titled "Evaluation of eight high-resolution gridded precipitation products in the Heihe River basin, Northwest China" by Yuwei Wang and Na Zhao submitted for consideration for possible publication in MDPI Remote Sensing.

This study investigates the accuracy of precipitation estimates from eight high-resolution gridded precipitation products such as CMORPHv1, CRU TSv.4.05, ERA5, GSMaP_NRT, IMERG V06B, MSWEPv2.0, PERSIANN-CDR, and TRMM 3B42v7 using precipitation observations from 23 meteorological observation stations over the Heihe River basin, Northwest China at various timescales.

The subject of this study is suitable for Remote Sensing journal. Data and methodology are robust. Results could be helpful for satellite data users assisting with selecting a high-resolution gridded precipitation dataset over the Heihe River basin suitable for a particular application.

Revision is required before publishing the manuscript.

Abstract.

Line 16. continuous precipitation information =>  information which accurately describes spatial distribution of precipitation

Line 24. favorable results => accurate results

Line 32. the least ideal performance => worse  performance

  1. Introduction.

Line 80. considerable studies. Consider re-wording

Lines 97-98. The Heihe River originates in the Qilian Mountains, flows through an irrigated agricultural area and finally joins two lakes in the desert in the north, forming the second largest inland river basin in China. Consider moving it to section 2 Study area and data.

  1. Study area and data

Line 133. the Heihe Rive = > the Heihe River

Line 179. The GSMaP product was produced using the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JAXA) => Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Line 227. A summary of the information of these stations is listed in Table 2. Consider moving the table in Appendix.

  1. Methodology

Line 235. three consecutive monthly data points were accumulated as seasonal data. Consider re-wording

Lines 250 -282. Lengthy explanation of statistical indices; readers supposed to be familiar with this. Consider considerable shortening.

Line 283. route of this study. Consider re-wording

  1. Results

Evaluating eight datasets, the authors go into great details presenting the results. It resembles a report  of a university student rather than a science paper. Only key results should be presented; supporting results should be moved to Appendix.

  1. Discussion

On the contrary, discussion is rather short; key points must be strengthened.

General comments: (i) as English is not the first language of the authors, I recommend using MDPI editing service for improving quality of this manuscript, and (ii) the manuscript is too long, consider shortening.

This reviewer recommends accepting the manuscript after suggested major revision.

Yours faithfully,

The Reviewer

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors did adequate work in evaluating the performance of eight precipitation products over the Heihe River basin, northwest China with the ground-based rain gauges. The manuscript is easy to Follow and can be accepted in the present form.

Author Response
