Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The purpose of this article is to assist villages and towns in resolving the current space construction dilemma, promoting the construction of digital villages and towns, and implementing the digital transformation of village and town evaluation content, data, and methods. This research contributes to the development of a method of spatial evaluation in villages and towns that is based on multisource data and produces more real-time and quantitative results. The study's strength is its attempt to combine several methods and data sources in the creation of a number of indices to assess the spatial development of villages and towns.

In general, the article lacks an adequate discussion of the results of the application of a multi-source data-based evaluation model in the Suining County case. It would be preferable if the findings of this study were compared to the findings of other studies on the same topic conducted in the last five years in various countries' spatial contexts, particularly in terms of facility convenience and space compactness. It is suggested that a discussion of it be included before the conclusion section. Recent references relevant to this topic are still limited to the Chinese context, with almost nothing related to contexts outside of China; it is suggested that references from other country contexts be added (particularly to support the discussion).

In particular, there is a term that needs to be defined, namely "village-like urbanization" (first paragraph, page 13), as well as a phrase which is unclear, namely the use of dots in the phrase "and residential concentration in the community. patterns". Furthermore, there is a sentence in that paragraph that is questionable: "land use structure and industrial development have gradually moved toward the mode of concentration and concentration"...

Reviewer 2 Report

This article seeks to shed light on the transformation of urban and rural space in China by focusing on the spatial construction of villages and towns in northern Jiangsu. They analyze it by "compactness" and "convenience" are extracted as the elements of spatial evaluation.

Although the methodology is clearly stated, the author(s) should discuss the related literature extensively. In the current form, the related literature seems to be weak. The hypothesis could be stated explicitly. Lastly, the conclusion and discussion part on discussing the spatial transformation in urban and rural parts of the cases should be discussed extensively by connecting it with the literature discussions.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear author:

Based on the actual situation, this paper evaluates the village and town space of Suining County through a large number of multi-source data and digital technology. Through the research of relevant aspects, it is found that the spatial compactness of villages and towns roughly presents the characteristics of "X" pattern decreasing from the middle to the four sides, while facility convenience generally presents the characteristics of right "人" pattern. At the town level, facility convenience basically presents the pattern characteristics of "center-node" differentiation structure. The research helps to solve the current spatial dilemma of village and town development, and provides new ideas for the construction of digital towns. This article has rigorous structure, rich content and fluent language, but after reading, I still have the following problems:

1Abstract:

Please express "1" in English, do not use Chinese.

2.Introduction :

1)Please supplement the research status of spatial planning using POI data.

2)Please supplement the research status of quantitative analysis on the current situation of village and town space with the help of multi-source data and digital technology.

  1. 3. Current situation of village and town space in northern Jiangsu

Please explain specifically that "the spatial form restricts the allocation efficiency of facilities to a certain extent." or provide corresponding data to support this view.

  1. Evaluation index system

It is suggested that the spatial evaluation index system of villages and towns should be expressed in graphical form, and the results will be more direct and beautiful.

5.Evaluation data and research methods

  • Please adjust the corresponding format or content to make figure 3 and Figure 4 clearer.

6.Evaluation of village and town space in Suining County

  • Please adjust the formula format so that it does not obscure the text content.
  • Can you explain the relationship and difference between spatial compactness and Facility convenience?
  • Can you explain the relationship between the characteristics of spatial compactness and facility convenience of Suining County and the policies mentioned above?
  • Please express "1" in English, do not use Chinese.

7.Conclusions

Please summarize the spatial evaluation characteristics and suggested measures of villages and towns in Suining County.

Reviewer 4 Report

The paper tries to analyze the spatial patterns of rural village distribution and construction land use by using various sources of information. Lots of analysis work has been done. However, the presentation of the paper is scattered and confusing.

1) the paper starts with the intention of studying how digital technology impacts the "spatial construction" of villages, but digital technology and how it impact the rural land use were not discussed in the paper

2) the language of the paper needs to be significantly improved. The terms need to be clarified and double checked. For instance, the "sptail evaluation of villages and towns", "spatial construction", "population spatialization data", "economic spatialization data", "construction field of villages", "village construction land includes two parts: administrative village and natural village", unclear what are they means.

3) On page 2 first paragraph, several studies, and researcher names were mentioned, but no reference

4) section 2.1 "two statistical data of village population and village number (table 2)". Table 2 on the same page reports "village land use change in northern Jiangsu from 2010 to 2019", not matching.

5) section 2 is spatial structure analysis, then the study area, section 3 introduces the evaluation index system, section 4 is evaluation data and research methods, and section 5 determines index weight. The structure is confusing.

6) In section 5 the pdf version is messed up, I can not read through

7) table 2 average village land area //hm2, per capita village land area // m2, unclear the unit and how valid the data are
