Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This article entitled “ The Polysaccharidic Nature of the Skeleton of Marennine as Determined by NMR Spectroscopy" by Zebiri et al. evaluated chemical structure of water-soluble blue-green pigment marennine produced by the diatom Haslea ostrearia. The need to know the structure of such important molecule is grate, so my conclusion can be only that this research is very  important and useful for the research community.

I suggest only two small edits:

Line 313 – remove main

Line 394 – please provide mL or L of supernatants that was collected; did you have a replicate of cultures or did you just use one culture growth from which you collected the blue supernatant

Author Response

We would like to thank Reviewer #1 for having accepted to review our manuscript and for his suggestions.

“Line 313 – remove main”

removed

“Line 394 – please provide …      “

We have added information about the volume(s) of supernatant and the replicates in line 419 ff of the revised manuscript.

Reviewer 2 Report

This is an interesting study. The authors have characterized marennine in more detail by NMR, determined the monosaccharide constituents after hydrolysis, and discussed the results with previous findings. The manuscript is generally well-written and structured. However, I advise the authors to find a native English speaker to proofread the manuscript.

Page 3, Line 119: Please change "(Figure S1a and c)" to "(Figures S1a and S1c)".

Page 3: "ppm 1H" should be changed to "ppm in 1H NMR spectra" or "ppm for 1H"; "ppm 13C" should be changed to "ppm in 13C NMR spectra" or "ppm for 13C".
