This paper presents research on the influence that organisational behaviour and workplace culture have on the success of and barriers faced by adopting telework within the B2C e-business context among organisations in Australia, Singapore and American based organisations in Singapore. This qualitative study used interview methods to determine success factors and barriers in adopting telework. A total of 16 participants were interviewed in the study and the outcomes highlight differences in the work-related values according to the respective cultural backgrounds of managers and employees. These findings create new possibilities for research on how telework success and barriers to success are perceived since a major existing limitation of the telework literature is that organisational theory has been largely ignored. E-commerce has brought both opportunities and challenges to Internet marketers. One challenge facing the marketers is to “convert” Internet users who are reluctant to buy things online to real online shoppers. To enlarge online customer base, it is necessary for researchers and practitioners to understand cognitive and psychological factors involved in a potential online buyer’s decision-making process. Drawing upon consumer innovativeness and technology acceptance research, we developed a conceptual model about how cognition and personality would affect an individual’s attitude toward online shopping and hence his or her purchasing intention. Our findings show that what an individual thinks and feels about online shopping do influence his or her purchasing intention. The individuals who were more risk-taking, open to new experience, and had higher level of self-efficacy appeared to be more prone to buying online. These findings call for further research on consumer psychology in the context of online shopping. Full article

This issues paper is concerned with ensuring the integrity of Australia’s e-court processes through the development of information protection standards and protocols. The integrity of the court process is important to the national interest because businesses and citizens depend on the certainty of court decisions, naturally assuming that their information and privacy is protected. This paper is a catalyst for future research leading to the creation of an information protection framework, including policies and standards enabling courts to define the use of courtroom technologies, thus ensuring that their design and application is grounded within established information protection principles. Without substantiation of the quality of technological structures and processes used by e-courts, the system of certainty upon which the courts and law are based has the potential to become inherently uncertain. Applications running over peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have exploded since the late 1990s. Research is needed into many aspects of P2P. These include architecture, application functionality, and the categories of digital works that are shared using P2P facilities. A range of significant strategic, consumer and policy issues also arise, such as challenges to the operation of copyright, defamation and other censorship laws. Organisations affected by P2P are devising and deploying countermeasures, such as technological protections for digital works and attempts to identify devices and users. These too require study. This paper presents the landscape of research opportunities, indicating methods that might be appropriately applied to the various kinds of questions. Full article

The paper covers different interpretations of Online Distance Learning (ODL) organization and explanation of current managerial theories that have impact on its development. In the paper, two research methods have been applied i.e. case studies and literature interpretation. First, author presents case studies and delivers characteristics of the four case studies of ODL institutions project development. In the main part of the paper, basing on the case studies and literature studies, author delivers the model of value creation and sharing at ODL university. Author argues that ODL university value creation demands a completely new approach towards educational processes. Their development requires knowledge and relationship management, IT architecture development, resource management by contracts, standardization for controllability, compatibility and interoperability. The paper contains a review of standards applicable in online distance education organizations. Author concludes that proposed value development model is important for ODL organization strategy management. Full article

Revisiting Amit and Zott’s model of value creation sources: The SymBelt Customer Center case

Amit and Zott [2] recognized the importance of understanding value sources in electronic business (ebusiness). However, the concept of e-business is rather broad and therefore this paper suggests a more narrow focus on the value of complementary services. The reason for this approach is an ever-increasing importance for firms to provide complimentary services supporting products. Amit and Zott’s [2] model of the sources of value creation in e-business includes four dimensions of value creation; efficiency, lock-in, complementarities and novelty. In contrast to Amit and Zott [2], we suggest that the four dimensions of the model should not only be used as value creation sources, but moreover as value evaluation dimensions. The findings of this case study, where Metso Paper’s Internet-based service (a complementary service) and some of their customers’ perceptions of the service have been studied, show that the customers have used the services infrequently. This study also shows that in this specific business-to-business context, the characteristics of the product, which the Internet-based service supports, are vital. Therefore, we suggest a modification of Amit and Zott’s [2] business model when used as a model for value evaluation of complementary services, to replace complementarities with nature of the core product. It is important for electronic commerce companies to understand the service quality of their systems, such as, the response time for users’ interactions, the service delay zone and the number of appropriate users accessing the systems concurrently. The accurate and prompt management of the service quality can greatly help build and operate systems more efficiently. In this paper we present a methodology for the service quality measurement and the user capacity modeling for electronic commerce systems. While most previous researches on this issue have been based on the closed-LAN environment, we conduct experiments under real network environment using sample e-Commerce systems. Specifically, we measure the response times for e-Commerce transactions under Cable, DSL, and wireless networks, and analyze the delay zones in processing the users’ service requests. The discrete event simulation and hybrid simulation are performed to estimate the maximum number of users using a response time limit as the service quality criterion. We also investigate the self-similar characteristics on the response time and the number of users, and the extensive results of the experiment and the simulations are described. Full article
