Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the research focus on plastic pollution has mainly focused on the source, separation/analysis method, abundance detection, environmental behavior and ecological effects of plastic in the marine and tidal flat environment. However, some researchers have pointed out that soil may be a larger plastic storer than the ocean, as the plastic storage capacity of soil is about 4-23 times that of the ocean. Therefore, plastic pollution in the soil environment cannot be ignored. At present, the main plastic pollutants in farmland soil that are closely related to people's production and life include plastic film and seedling floating plate pollution.

In the farmland soil, the residue formed by the incomplete recycling of mulch film is not only easily swallowed by organisms and accumulated in the food chain, but also has a relatively serious impact on the quality of cultivated land and the growth and development of plants. It will also become a carrier for transporting various pollutants due to its charged property, causing a huge amount of pollution and posing a potential threat to the environment. While the seedling floating tray is often used for the cultivation of grain and tobacco seedlings, the environmental problems caused by its unreasonable recycling have also attracted more attention from researchers. In this Special Issue, we solicit papers on the following topics (but topics are not limited to only these):

  1. Effects of residual mulch film on the assembly of degrading microbial communities;
  2. Cleaning, recycling and sustainable utilization of waste seedling floating trays;
  3. Degradation of biodegradable microplastics in agricultural soils;
  4. Effect of microplastics on soil elements (e.g., C, N and P) cycling in the farmland soil;
  5. Interaction of emerging contaminants (e.g., antibiotics and nanomaterials) with microplastics and the effect on soil organisms;
  6. Analytical technology for microplastics and organic pollutants in the environment;
  7. Metabolic change in plants and soil due to microplastics and organic pollutants.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
