Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue on Sufism and contemporary Islamic studies explores the role of Sufi thought in the contemporary world. In particular, the Special Issue explores how Sufi schools of thought and Sufi thinkers have responded to the challenges of modernity, globalization, secularization, and the rise of Islamic radicalism, Islamic fundamentalism, militant Islam, and Salafi thought, as well as the various interpretations of theological concepts that have influenced and shaped Islamic beliefs throughout Islamic history. This Special Issue explores the relationship between Sufism and politics, as well as the role of Sufism in the relationship between Islam and the West. The Special Issue also focuses on the increasing interest in Sufism, Sufi literature, and Sufi thought in Western academic institutions.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions on how Sufism (1) provides a counter thought to Islamic extremism, (2) serves as a bridge between Islam and the West, (3) brings solutions to crises affecting Muslim societies, (4) promotes cultural dialogues, and (5) eradicates religious violence and extremism. It also welcomes contributions focusing on Western attitudes towards Sufism and the influence of Sufism on Western thought and cultures.

This Special Issue sheds light on Sufi schools of thought, their responses to the various interpretations of theological concepts and doctrines that have contributed to the rise of Islamic radicalism, extremism, intolerance, and violence, and how Sufi thinkers have utilized Islamic mysticism and spirituality to confront Islamic anti-modernist thought.

We request that, prior to submitting a manuscript, interested authors initially submit a proposed title and an abstract of 200-300 words summarizing their intended contribution. Please send it to the Guest Editor or to the Assistant Editor of Religions. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Guest Editors to ensure a proper fit within the scope of this Special Issue. Full manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
