Dear Colleagues,
What makes religious music religious? How does music in religious contexts provide space for spirituality and religious experience? I am pleased to invite you to contribute to our Special Issue Spirituality in Religious Music. This will be a cross-disciplinary Special Issue, inviting scholars with interests in musicology, religious studies, theology, postcolonial theory, anthropology, hymnology, ritual studies and spiritual studies. This Special Issue aims to explore the intersection of religion and music, art and the construction of religious meaning, spirituality and emotionality. It specifically aims to explore epistemologies of music in a variety of religious contexts. How and why is certain music understood to be religious and a means of spritual practice? The scope of this Special Issue is wide, including studies on liturgies and hymns in Christian denomination as well as musical practices in Islamic, Buddhist and Hindu contexts, the use of popular music in religious contexts, singing as spiritual practice in daily life, sounds and singing in monastic life, music in indegenious religions and spiritual practice, in addition to theoretical studies on music, epistemology and religious or spiritual construction of meaning.
We welcome original research articles and reviews. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:
- The spirituality of Sapmi music;
- Jazz in religious contexts and religious works by jazz musicians/composers;
- Spirituality and religion in popular music;
- Environmental concerns and religious music;
- Religious music and social protest;
- Emotions and piety;
- Singing/playing as spiritual practice;
- Philosophy of music and religion.
We request that, prior to submitting a manuscript, interested authors initially submit a proposed title and an abstract of 200–300 words summarizing their intended contribution. Please send it to the Guest Editor, Dr. Carl Petter Opsahl (carl.petter.opsahl@mf.no), or to the Assistant Editor of Religions, Ms. Margaret Liu (margaret.liu@mdpi.com). Abstracts will be reviewed by the Guest Editor for the purposes of ensuring a proper fit within the scope of the Special Issue. Full manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Religions is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
