Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This special issue of Religions is on Judaism and African American religions, particularly on interreligious encounter between Jewish theology and African American theology. While some significant research in this area exists, the relatively small amount is surprising. One aim of this special issue is to foster and highlight further scholarship on this vibrant and fertile topic. The material in this issue will be of interest to a “wide range of thoughtful readers and academic scholars of religion, as well as others interested in the multidisciplinary study of religions.” (Aims of Religions).

In terms of scope, the issue will focus on areas of interreligious engagement between two distinct religious traditions, namely Judaism and any African American religion, including but not limited to Christianity, Islam, and African-influenced traditions in the United States, such as Vodou and Santeria. (In other words, research on Black Judaism would likely fall outside the scope of this issue). Ideally, the issue will include a range of contributions, from Jewish, black, and other perspectives.

In this special issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. The preference is for scholarship that is theological in nature. This could involve a constructive, systematic, or historical theological approach. Areas of theological interest at the interreligious intersections of Jewish theology and African American theology include perspectives on God, spirit(s), humanity, theodicy, ethics, ritual, and interreligious dialogue, among others. While the preferred focus for contributions is theological, the hope is to range out from this central concern into other realms of interest. These other realms might involve considerations of Judaism and an African American religion in regard to scriptural studies, historical approaches, feminism/womanism, social scientific treatments, and research on the relationship between religion and science, culture, politics, literature, and the arts.
