Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Docosahexaenoic and Eicosapentaenoic Acids (DHA and EPA) are omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids that are the subject of intense scientific research due to their profound implications for human health and disease. Considering their role in maintaining the structural integrity and functionality of cell membranes and, therefore, cell function, DHA and EPA have gained attention as potential therapeutic agents for a variety of diseases. In the field of neurobiology, omega-3 PUFAs undoubtedly have an important role in neural development, synaptic plasticity and neuroinflammation, making it a compelling focus for researchers investigating neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties of these fatty acids direct research toward the determination of their role in cardiovascular health. Finally, in the context of growing concern about respiratory health in particular, the significance of DHA and EPA in regulating inflammation and oxidative stress—critical factors in the development of respiratory diseases—should not be overlooked.

Subsequently, both DHA and EPA can be easily supplemented from exogenous sources (such as sea fish, nuts or seeds); therefore, learning about their beneficial properties seems vital for modern therapy development.

This Special Issue of Pharmaceuticals (IF 4.6), entitled "DHA and EPA in Health and Disease", welcomes the submissions of manuscripts which either include original research or reviews of the scientific literature.

Our aim is to collect research from experts in the field summarizing the available knowledge about DHA and EPA in broadly understood pathological processes as well as in healthy states.

We believe this type of almanac would be a good starting point for new considerations and innovative future research.
