Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Natural products are broadly defined as anything produced by life. However, in our field,  a natural product is an organic molecule created by a living organism. Microorganisms, animals, and plants produce a large number of natural products, including primary and secondary metabolites. The availability of new and more sophisticated extraction methods has aided in maintaining the constant growth and discovery of new compounds isolated from those living organisms. In addition to new separation techniques, more sophisticated analyses and instrumentation have made it possible to assign the correct chemical structure to the new isolated molecules at lower concentrations and in record time. Those advances in the field give expedited access to new potential drug candidates with exceptional biological activity. Although the isolation of natural products is a source of medicinal useful compounds, it also presents limitations such as the amount of product isolated or the challenges associated with getting access to their original source. Therefore, synthetic organic chemists play a fundamental role to synthesize those natural products, in their laboratory, using cleverly designed synthetic strategies. Many times, development of new chemical transformations are required to accomplish their synthetic goals.

This Special Issue is focused on original research articles that cover the design, development, and use of new synthetic methodologies to access natural products. Researchers working on formal or total syntheses of natural products are encouraged to publish research articles herein, but work regarding the development of new methodologies for the synthesis of intermediates as well as methodology used in the synthesis of natural products derivatives are also welcome.

Original reviews encompassing the recent literature on new methodologies to access natural products, on unusual classes of natural products, natural product derivatives, newly discovered bioactivity of natural products, and related “catalytic” processes are also considered.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
