Dear Colleague,
Lipids are important organic molecules that play essential roles in the structure and function of living organisms, ranging from maintaining the structural integrity of bio membranes to signalling molecules. Variations in lipid composition and its levels influence the functional and physiological state of the cell. Dietary lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids and their metabolites act as signalling molecules that are involved in inflammatory processes, neurodegenerative diseases and modulating the expression of genes involved in the control of inflammation. Due to their intrinsic properties, natural or synthetic lipids in aqueous mediums form liposomes—spherical vesicles composed of one or more lipid bilayers. Liposomes are now considered the most commonly used nanocarriers for various potentially active hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules due to their high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. Moreover, other receptor-mediated polycation systems have been developed as promising carriers for the delivery and expression of plasmid DNA encoding genes into target cells. Thus, we invite authors to contribute full-length papers or review articles to this Special Issue which focus on the role of natural and synthetic lipids and their components in nutrition and biomedicine. This information will be beneficial to a large audience of scientists working in the field.
