Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cancer represents one of the most pressing challenges in global health. Despite substantial efforts to improve the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, tens of millions of people are diagnosed each year, making it the second leading cause of death in many countries. A common problem encountered in utilizing classical chemotherapy and modern antitumor agents is their low solubility in water, which causes a decrease in their bioavailability, as well as in their selectivity towards cancer cells.
Despite efforts to develop new antitumor therapies, targeted drug delivery systems still present some disadvantages due to their hydrophobicity, resulting in serious side effects, limited applicability, and therapeutic ineffectiveness. One possible approach to overcoming these pharmacological drawbacks is the development of supramolecular systems, which has drawn increasing attention due to the potential of incorporating supramolecular chemistry in chemotherapy. Nevertheless, there remain many questions regarding the process of biodegradation in supramolecular systems, the possibility of immunological reactions arising from their use in therapy, the metabolism and excretion of these systems, and the long-term effects associated with their use.
For this Special Issue, researchers across the field are invited to submit original research papers or reviews focusing on supramolecular systems used for cancer therapy.
