Dear Colleagues,
Rapid developments in data, computing, and communications technologies combined with innovations in materials, energy, and transportation networks are used to enable smarter data-driven urban applications, enabling Smart Cities to emerge across the world. In this setting, data innovation and mobile and pervasive computing can serve those who live, work, and visit these metropolitan areas. Devices, networks, and cloud services are being merged with people and their activities—individuals or groups—to provide new and exciting possibilities in everything we do. Indeed, these technologies are central in generating civic innovation, where the best ideas are developed, amplified, and scaled. Moreover, the emergence of Smart Cities brings new challenges regarding adoption and sustainability. The former requires the design of services that are acceptable, accessible, and adaptable, while an investment must be made in educating the citizens in Smart City technology so as to avoid exclusion. The latter calls for standardization and design of procedures and measures that support risk prevention and resilience, while at the same time fostering Smart City business development and growth.
This Special Issue invites original research papers on the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel systems, algorithms, architectures, and experiences of innovative Smart City applications of mobile and pervasive computing and communications systems enabled by Future Internet technologies. Relevant topics include but are not limited to:
- Mobile and pervasive middleware for Smart Cities;
- Mobile and pervasive data engineering, data mining, and big data management for Smart Cities;
- Smartphone and pervasive experiences in Smart Cities;
- Smart City collective intelligence enabled by mobile and pervasive computing;

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
