Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Freshwater prawn (FWP) refers primarily to caridean crustaceans that spend at least the postlarval phase in freshwater. Several species are exploited by fisheries and aquaculture. Most of the FWPs used in aquaculture belong to the genus Macrobrachium. They are low-trophic species of crustaceans that can be farmed in almost all aquaculture systems in monoculture or in co-culture. They have a special role in integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems, restorative aquaculture, and nutrient-sensitive aquaculture. There is a huge potential for the international expansion of FWP culture worldwide. Research should be conducted to improve the culture of these species in different countries, using the principles of a circular bioeconomy. This will support technologies to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030.

Although the culture of freshwater prawn has been described in a number of international review papers, books, and book chapters, there are many gaps in the knowledge that need to be filled. This Special Issue aims to publish high-quality research on innovative aquaculture systems using FWPs in each of the four culture phases: reproduction, larviculture, nursery, and grow-out. Studies on the monoculture and co-culture of any other terrestrial or aquatic species are welcomed. In addition,  studies focused on all value chain elements of aquaculture are appropriate, including processing, trade, and market. We welcome the submissions of original research articles or short communications and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fishes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
