Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The application of pervasive technology and ubiquitous computing to people's everyday spaces, such as houses, cities, work environments, etc., has favoured the creation of more personalized and efficient environments. In cases of working in critical and sensitive spaces, such as hospitals, military settings, public administration, etc., the overall requirements are usually more restrictive. For this reason, AI and data analytics play an essential role in creating these new sensitive spaces, where aspects such as information security and the privacy of managed data are of the utmost importance. Traditionally, AI and data analysis have focused on offering robust mechanisms for managing the data handled by smart spaces, extracting meaningful information from them, or adapting their behaviour to the needs of their users.

However, when these techniques are applied to critical and sensitive environments, in addition to the above, it is crucial to promote understanding of the internal operations, guarantee an acceptable degree of transparency, and promote system resilience.

This Special Issue will include studies investigating the application of innovative AI and data analytics techniques to sensitive smart environments in order to improve the security and privacy of the users and understanding and transparency of internal system operations. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Explainable artificial intelligence;
  • Real-world data analytics;
  • Complex data visualization;
  • Pervasive technology acceptance;
  • Pervasive sensitive services;
  • User-centered security for sensitive smart environments.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
