Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease of the intestine with significant morbidity and impact on quality of life. It is now recognized as a global disease, with a rising disease prevalence across different countries. The exact etiology of the disease is unclear. There are defective immune responses to environmental antigens and the gut microbiota in genetically predisposed individuals. An early diagnosis of the disease is essential for the initiation of therapy at an early stage. However, its nonspecific symptoms and diagnostic confusion with IBD mimics can result in a diagnostic delay. Our therapeutic armamentarium has been rapidly increasing over the years. Conventional drugs like steroids and thiopurines have stood the test of time. Newer drugs, including biological agents and small molecules with different mechanisms of action, have been tested with fair rates of response and remission. It is vital that we identify the right approach to diagnosis, as well as the right drugs for use in each scenario.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide all the latest information related to the diagnosis and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This will provide important information to help clinicians improve their decisions in not only the diagnosis but also the management of this disease.
