Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Manuscripts are solicited for the Special Issue entitled “Physical phenomena, microstructures, and properties unique to metal additive manufacturing” of MDPI’s journal Crystals. The interplay of several physical phenomena spanning across several length and time scales makes metal additive manufacturing (AM) processing routes unique. Such unique processing conditions subsequently lead to unique microstructures and properties in additively manufactured metals and alloys. The objective of this Special Issue is to curate a collection of works that enhance the current understanding of the following:

  1. The physical phenomena that occur during AM processing;
  2. The unique evolution of microstructures in AM-processed metals and alloys;
  3. The unique mechanical behavior, including deformation and damage mechanisms, of AM-processed metals and alloys.

We welcome computational and/or experimental submissions from fusion-based metal AM or solid-state metal AM processing that encompass, but are not limited to, the following broad spectrum of topics:

  • Leveraging unique processing conditions in metal AM for alloy design.
  • Advances in process optimization for the additive manufacturing of diverse metal alloy systems.
  • Investigations into the complex relationships between processing conditions, microstructural characteristics, and material properties in metal additive manufacturing.
  • The application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance process efficiency, quality assurance, and inspection processes in metal additive manufacturing.
  • The implementation of in situ monitoring and adaptive control systems for the metal additive manufacturing process.
  • Explorations into new frontiers in metal additive manufacturing technology.
  • The development of components with graded functional properties, or those that are composed of multiple materials, via metal additive manufacturing.
  • The application of metal additive manufacturing in critical sectors, including the nuclear, aerospace, and automotive industries, and its challenges and prospects.
  • Research on the feasibility and implications of metal additive manufacturing in microgravity conditions.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
