Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Surface engineering technology mainly functions through physical, chemical or mechanical processes to change the chemical composition of the material surface, organizational structure, or surface state, or to form a special covering layer, in order to make the material surface possess better friction and wear characteristics, corrosion resistance and other functional characteristics. This process could ensure that the product can be long-term stable operation under high temperature, high pressure, high speed, high corrosion and other harsh working conditions. Surface engineering technology based on welding methods such as arc surfacing, laser cladding, surface modification, friction stir, etc., has a very wide range of applications in aerospace, automotive, petrochemical, medical and remanufacturing fields. This technology can be not only directly employed to product manufacturing but also used to repairment. According to the standard of high quality, high efficiency, energy saving, material saving and environmental protection, the application of surface engineering technology based on weld methods could significantly improve the service life, reliability and market competitiveness of products and restorations, significantly reduce the adverse impact on the environment, and vigorously promote the construction of a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society.

This scope of this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers focused on the following concepts:

  • Development of surface engineering technology based on weld methods, including but not limit to weld surfacing, laser cladding, spray weld, additive manufacturing processes, friction stir processes, field-assisted processes, or etc.;
  • Monitoring, analysis and optimization of different processes during welding;
  • Discussion of the effect of weld processes on the microstructure (such as phase transformation, grain orientation, crystal structure, etc.), defects (such as crack and pore), and performance (such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, fatigue property or other special properties) in normal or different extreme environments through theoretical, experimental and simulation methods;
  • Understanding the degradation mechanisms of coatings through friction, wear or other dynamic loading conditions, corrosion, etc.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
