Dear colleagues,
Studies on the surfaces and interfaces of functional materials are being reinforced thanks to the dynamism or the rise of themes such as catalysis, biomedical research with the synthesis of functional surfaces used for the growth of stems cells, or the work carried out on the diversification of the substrates used in the case of the study of electronic properties. Developments in characterization techniques have also contributed to diversifying our work. For example, microscopy techniques, initially reserved for a small number of fields of study, are now identified as necessary techniques according to a wide range of thematics. Finally, functionalizing or characterizing could not be developed without associating with it advances in the field of the synthesis of surfaces/interfaces. Recent developments make it possible to envisage increasingly large homogeneous surfaces and, thus, come closer to industrial standards for more and more different synthesis methods.
These are only some of the examples in the very wide field of the study of functional surfaces, and this Special Issue aims at collecting an overview of coatings, thin and thick films, and surface and interface research activities in France. Research topics include but are not limited to:
- Thin and thick films;
- Processes for coating deposition and modification;
- Characterization techniques;
- Functional, protective, and decorative coatings;
- Dyes, pigments, and their intermediates;
- Wear, corrosion, erosion;
- Coatings for high temperature;
- Film materials for packaging;
- Applied surface science;
- Adsorption, adhesion, functionalization;
- Fundamental and functional properties of surface and interfaces;
- Theoretical and computational modeling of surfaces and interfaces;
- High surface area systems: colloids, nanoparticles, large interfaces.
It is my pleasure to invite you to submit manuscripts on the subject "State-of-the-Art on Coatings Research in France 2020" for this Special Issue. Full papers, communications, as well as comprehensive reviews are welcome. Please feel free to contact me as the guest editor in case of further questions.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
