Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is noteworthy that radical cystectomy still represents the cornerstone for treatment of bladder cancer. However, over the last few decades, changes in patient and tumor characteristics, as well as technological innovations, have contributed to important advancements in the surgical treatment of bladder cancer.

First, radical cystectomy is nowadays more frequently delivered in patients with less aggressive tumor characteristics. Indeed, radical cystectomy is the preferred option in patients diagnosed with BCG failure and very-high risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Moreover, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer has increased the proportion of patients with no residual disease at final pathology. Second, attention to quality of life across all ages has encouraged urologists to propose orthotopic neobladder, develop sex-sparing techniques and limit pelvic lymph node dissection template whenever possible. Third, the popularity of robotic surgery has led urologists and healthcare systems to support the introduction of robot-assisted radical cystectomy in everyday clinical practice while creating a strong linkage between technical and surgical innovations. Taken together, we believe that radical cystectomy represents an evolving landscape. In consequence, the objective of the current Special Issue is to collect updated evidences of new approaches for surgical treatment of bladder cancer.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
