Dear colleagues,
It is my pleasure serve as guest editor for this invaluable segment on "Updates on Oncoplastic Techniques" in our respected journal. As the Chief of Breast Surgery, Director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center, and an Associate Professor at Georgetown University Hospital, I have been privileged to observe and contribute to the constant evolution of oncoplastic breast surgery techniques.
In 2015, I authored a comprehensive meta-analysis on nipple-sparing mastectomy techniques that reported equivalent oncologic outcomes for nipple-sparing versus skin-sparing mastectomy procedures. Additionally, I had the opportunity to delve further into this field by writing a literature review on the oncologic safety of oncoplastic surgery, which, to this date, remains one of the most cited papers in this domain. It encapsulates the journey of oncoplastic surgery from being an emerging field to its current status as a crucial element of breast cancer treatment.
Oncoplastic breast surgery has revolutionized the ways in which we approach breast cancer treatment, creating a perfect symbiosis between oncologic safety and aesthetic consideration. The evolution of this field has opened doors to treatment modalities that are not only focused on eliminating the disease but also preserving patients’ body image and improving quality of life.
In this segment, we aim to compile the most recent developments in oncoplastic techniques from around the world. These writings, authored by experts in the field, provide state-of-the-art insights and promise to be an invaluable resource for surgeons, researchers, and anyone committed to enhancing breast cancer treatment outcomes.
We stand at a juncture where innovation does not solely concern technological advancements, but also implicates the cusutomization of treatment strategies to value, respect, and enhance our patients' quality of life. This segment on oncoplastic techniques serves as a testament to this belief. I am confident that the insights shared within these pages will inspire thought, foster dialogue, and continue to drive progress in this exceptional field.
