It is with sadness that we have to inform about the passing of Prof. Dr. Sampath Parthasarathy, the Editor-in-Chief of Healthcare during the years 2015–2020. We were privileged to have him serve as Editor-in-Chief and are grateful for the many contributions he made to the journal, and the legacy his research has left to the academic world.
Prof. Parthasarathy's research focused on the fundamental mechanisms of the development of atherosclerosis and heart failure and the role of oxidative stress in the development of cardiovascular diseases and associated risk factors including Type 2 diabetes. In his research, he assessed to what extent some level of oxidative stress may even be benefitial in activating antioxidant enzymes and thereby slowing down the atherogenic process.
He believed in interdisciplinary approaches to research. The Editor-in-Chief role allowed him, in his own words, to "bring statisticians, population scientists, epidemiologists, medical students and researchers, nurses, and many others into a common theme of healthcare". Dr. Parthasarathy also perceived Healthcare to be a platform for publishing policy guidelines, with an impact reaching beyond academia. His legacy will be preserved within the journal.
We wish to express our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.
