Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Editor,

I carefully read the submission title 'Occurrence of Marine Ingredients in Fragrance: Update of the State of Knowledge'.

My first impression that the paper contain new information and title of the manuscript cover its content. The summary is appropriate and the aim of the work clearly established. The methods are used are adequate and used sophisticated techniques and equipment's.  I found the results very reliable. Discussion and conclusions are well documented and scientifically coherent.

However I have some corrections and additions on it before acceptance.

Author Response

Dear Editor,

On behalf of the authors, I would like to thank you very much for your expertise. Thank you very much for the references you have provided, it is a definite plus for the manuscript. As recommended:

1. Line 34 ....whose basic foundation is chemistry...please provide some references

Three references have been added and are numbered in the manuscript from 1 to 3.

2.

Line 177. ....s [73], and well dis-..... Please add below references to make stronger this sentence..

As recommended by yourself, the two references have been added and are numbered 78 and 79.

Please find in attach file the revised manuscript.

Thanks in advance

Reviewer 2 Report

Chemistry-1422495-peer-review-v1

Occurrence of Marine Ingredients in Fragrance: Update of the State of Knowledge

The review is oriented to show an update of the state of knowledge about marine ingredients in fragrances. However, a significant percentage of the manuscript, from the introduction to section 5, show a series of very general information on essential oils, their constituents, and structures (table 1), which is not new.
Some definitions, for example the definitions given between lines 102-105, on page 3, are well-known concepts, not necessary in a review, and of little interest to potential readers of the journal.

The work should be revised, rewritten, goal-oriented, the rest of the information should be withdrawn, or simplified.

In its current state the manuscript is not suitable for the journal (Lack of novelty).

Author Response

The authors are very grateful to the reviewer for his expertise.
The authors are sincerely sorry for the reviewer who found the manuscript not up to standard and we fully respect his opinion.
I would just like to remind you that the field of perfumes is very vast, many works have been reported on this subject. It is always difficult to make a perfect synthesis. The main objective was to highlight the place that marine fragrances can occupy in relation to a field dominated by fragrances from terrestrial plants. Data on marine odorant molecules are scarce and often marine odor is confused with a synthetic molecule that is Calone 1951. I have been working on marine volatiles for more than 20 years, through the algae of the genus Dictyopteris and Dictyota which are considered among the most interesting for perfumery and we have made through our publications and conferences several recommendations on the importance of natural marine sources and unfortunately this has not made the situation change. Through this review, I wanted to highlight the importance and specificity of marine natural products that could occupy a much better place in the future.
We also want to provide a maximum of olfactory properties on odorant molecules, especially marine ones, and we realised that there is a lot of experimental work to do.
Thank you once again for your opinion

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

I have read the authors' response to my opinion, which perhaps I have not expressed correctly or has not been understood, I apologize for that. The opinion was oriented to the inclusion of general concepts, which did not consider necessary to include them. The information referring to marine compounds seems to me necessary and relevant and of interest to future readers.

Summarizing if the authors consider that all the information is necessary to remain in the review due to its importance and if that opinion is shared by the other Reviewers and the Editor, I suggest that the review be accepted in its current state.
