Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced by acidogenic fermentation has gained recent interest as they are precursors for various biotechnological processes. Production of VFA from low-cost substrates and membrane based VFA recovery techniques are economical and environmentally friendly. This review represents a comprehensive information on VFA production, factors affecting the production, and strategies of recovery. The following modifications should be amended in the manuscript.

Line 108: in this paragraph add the different types of available food waste

Line 137: Mention the types of pretreatment step should be applied to improve the production of VFAs from SS

Line 150: mention the required pretreatment for AM

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The topic of the submitted manuscript “Volatile fatty acid production from organic waste with the emphasis on membrane-based recovery” is a review about the production of volatile fatty acid by acidogenic fermentation in different biotechnological processes and methods used for recovery of volatile fatty acids.

The paper was well detailed about production of volatile fatty acids and another secondary by-product during different technologies. It was a pleasure for me to read this review. The paper is very good, well-organized and everything is well-explained. The review gives detailed about factors that affecting the process and that influence the VFA production.

I recommend publication in Fermentation journal in present form.

Response: We are very grateful for the compliments. Thank you very much.

Reviewer 3 Report

The manuscript represents a diligent review of the literature on VFAs recovery from Organic Waste fementation. The major concern is related to the approach the Authors adopted for presenting the main results from the literature. In fact, the manuscript is a list of the main findings, of the operating conditions adopted in different studies, and so on. Thus, data are poorly elaborated so as to provide a clear and "simple" representation of the main findings. However, even in the present form, the review provides interesting information and represents a useful glance on the main approaches and findings in the field. Please, double check the language for typos or words that are not used in the proper technical form (i.e. wastepaper).
