Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In my opinion, this review paper addresses an important technical issue in the electrodeposition, and seems to have been competently conducted. However, I have several questions and point out problems;

  1. There is a problem with the structure of this review. First, the authors should present the electrodeposition methods and or the deposition technologies. Second, the authors should explain the Biocoatings, I think. Furthermore, the authors should describe more detail what the effect that the differences among electrodeposition methods will have on the coating films.
  2. To provide the complete table of contents in Introduction, that is easy to understand.
  3. What is the difference between the contents of “Biocoatings” and “Deposition technologies”? Deposition technologies are applied to Biocationgs, I believe.
  4. Please check subscript for chemical formula.
  5. There are relatively few references cited for dental material, I think. Please check the references.

I hope these comments will be helpful.

1. There is a problem with the structure of this review. First, the authors should present the electrodeposition methods and or the deposition technologies. Second, the authors should explain the Biocoatings, I think. Furthermore, the authors should describe more detail what the effect that the differences among electrodeposition methods will have on the coating films.

Answer: It is difficult to plan a structure of any review paper and particularly this one in which we would like to demonstrate two different aspects of coatings for biological (medical) applications, called shortly biocoatings: (i) their types based on their composition, and (ii) the electrodeposition methods applied specifically for biocoatings. Truly, we could prepare TWO papers, one on biocoatings and another for electrodeposition methods, but we have assumed that both issues are interrelated and for a serious review it is better to show both aspects in a single paper.

We have deeply discussed this specific remark of the Reviewer, but finally we are going to conserve the current organization of the paper. It is to note that this manuscript has been acknowledged by another reviewer as “well-organized” and any change may be critiqued by him/her. More importantly, if we change the sections, Biocoatings and Electrodeposition technologies, at the beginning we should present ALL ELECTRODEPOSTION METHODS nevertheless they are applied for biocoatings or not. And now, we show as the first ALL POSSIBLE BIOCOATINGS focusing on their properties and applications and secondly their deposition methods focusing on process parameters. In other words, at first, we would like to show WHAT COATINGS are applied, and then – WHAT DEPOSITION METHODS can be used for biocoatings.

The proposal of the Reviewer is likely based on our insufficient explanation of a philosophy of the paper. Therefore, understanding the idea of his/her comment, we kindly ask the Reviewer to accept a current review structure, but with our additional descriptions in the manuscript, related to the critique of the Reviewer, as shown by color in the revised version.

Finally, we have also decided, due to the last sentence of this comment, to add two subsections summarizing and demonstrating our opinions on: (i) Effects of deposited materials on medical applications of biocoatings, and (ii) Effects on deposition technology on properties of biocoatings.

2. To provide the complete table of contents in Introduction, that is easy to understand.

Answer: It has been done.

3. What is the difference between the contents of “Biocoatings” and “Deposition technologies”? Deposition technologies are applied to Biocationgs, I believe.

Answer: As written above, the biocoatings section shows the effects of deposited materials on the applications of coatings, and the technologies section – the effects of process parameters on the properties of coatings, and two additional subsections now appear in the revised manuscript as shown by color in the revised version.

4. Please check subscript for chemical formula.

Answer: We have checked all subscripts as suggested by the Reviewer.

5. There are relatively few references cited for dental material, I think. Please check the references.

Answer: We have added some recent papers on coatings on dental materials as suggested by the Reviewer.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors presented a review on the achievements in electrodeposited biocoatings enhancing the recent developments of metallic, ceramic, polymer, and composite electrodeposited coatings. This manuscript shows a very well-organized work, the results from the available literature being comprehensively described. Therefore, I recommend its publication in Coatings.

I suggest to introduce an image/ graph with the types of biocoatings available and described in this review in order to summarize them.

Answer: We have added the graph illustrating different types of biocoatings as suggested by the Reviewer.
