Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This manuscript reports the Study on Two-Dimensional Exit Pupil Expansion for Diffractive Waveguide Based on Holographic Volume Grating . In my opinion, the manuscript is suitable for publication in the applied sciences, after the authors have addressed the following major comments.

  1. Why are diffraction gratings considered a preferred option for waveguide head-mounted in-out coupling devices in AR/VR applications?
  2. What are the current challenges associated with diffraction waveguide coupling devices for AR head-mounted displays (HMD)?
  3. How does the paper establish two-dimensional (2D) grating ray-tracing models, and what is their significance in the development of AR-HMD holographic waveguide diffraction systems?
  4. Can you explain the concept of a honeycomb coupled grating array and its role in optimizing optical energy utilization and brightness uniformity in holographic waveguides?
  5. What is the purpose of the custom dynamic linked library (DLL) function in the paper's research, and how does it impact simulation time?
  6. How is the holographic lithography device composed of holographic optical elements (HOEs) utilized in this research, and what method is proposed for preparing HOEs?
  7. Could you elaborate on the process of inverse design with respect to diffraction efficiency and the use of the Holo-RCWA program with NSGA-II for optimization?
  8. What are the specific benefits or implications of reducing the optimization time from 2-3 days to 10 hours for the entire machine in AR/VR applications?
  9. In what ways is this research considered significant for the field of AR/VR application, and what potential impacts does it have on future developments in the industry?
