On the Direct Extrusion of Solder Wire from 52In-48Sn Alloy
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Considering that the presented manuscript is an extended version of a conference paper, the following minor revisions should be made:
1) Line 35 and for the whole manuscript: links to the literature must be replaced and presented in the form of [2-8] instead of [2,3,4,5,6,7,8].
2) Figures 1 and 2 are with very low resolution and quality. Please, replace them or improve the quality.
3) In Table 2, please provide the results of the chemical analysis. The sensitivity of the ICP-MS method is higher than you demonstrated for the impurities. It looks like you provide a certificated chemical composition and not the obtained results.
4) Lines 270-271 “Solder wire and rods obtained by direct pressing have high surface quality and precise geometrical dimensions (Figure 15).” How to prove? What are high surface quality and precise geometry? In my opinion, the two photos in Figure 15 are not enough to prove this statement.
5) Please check English one more time. There are some minor grammatical errors in the manuscript.

Reviewer 2 Report
In their contribuition "On the Direct Extrusion of Solder Wire from 52In-48Sn Alloy", Faizov et al. report on an alternative technique to manufacture wires of the aforementioned alloy. To do so, the authors use experimental means and, furthermore, simulate the process of manufacturing the wires. Although the contribution appears to be suited for "Machines", yet, there are certain issues, which need to be solved:
- It is stated that the alloy was obtained from reactions of indium and tin. What were the manufactures and purities (in percent) of the used metals?
- The composition of the obtained alloy was also checked using EDS. Although this method is well suited to determine the compositions of alloys, yet, it is hard to distinguish tin and indium due to their relatively similar electronic configurations. Therefore, a thorough calibration of the EDS instrumentation is needed to be able to distinguish tin and indium. Unfortunately, the authors did not provide any details regarding the calibration of the EDS equipment. Please provide that relevant information.
- It is mentioned that a specialized software "was used to simulate the extrusion process." Please cite an appropriate reference to acknowledge the use of the software.
- In table 1, the physical and mechanical properties of the alloy have been mentioned. It will be quite interesting, if the authors also determine these parameters for the wires, which are manufactured by their alternative technique, and compare them to the literature data. Hence, additional analyses of the physical and mechanical properties of their wires are required.
- Figure 14 and 17 are screenshots, which are not of utmost quality. Hence these figures need to be revised.
- Figures 1-4: Appropriate references acknowledging the use of the figures need to be cited. Furthermore, the authors need to make sure that they have the right to reproduce these figures as part of their publication.
