Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this paper, the performance evaluation of the new bio-trickling filter for styrene waste gas treatment is carried out. The experimental results show that the new bio-trickling filter has good performance and is of great significance for styrene waste gas treatment. The overall quality of the paper is good and meets the requirements of Sustainability, but there are still some minor problems in the format and references, and it is recommended to publish after minor revision. The comments and suggestions are as follows.

Line 12 "designed by ourselves was used" is suggested to be changed to "was designed".

Line 38-40, 44-47 References need to added.

Line 57 "CO2, H2O" numbers should be subscript.

Line 67 "m3/h" number should be superscript.

Line 73 "bio trickling" should be “bio-trickling”.

Line 151 There is no space between number and degrees centigrade.

Line 225 There is an extra full stop.

Some other symbols and punctuations need to be carefully checked to avoid writing errors.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article is “Performance evaluation of a novel bio-trickling filter for styrene waste gas treatment” needs a lot of improvements.

1.      Please polish the Abstract, that s the principal theme of the article and should reflect in the Abstract section.

2.      Think about the keywords like Performance, Waste, etc. When we are going to present the keywords, we should present those in the Article.

3.      In the Literature section, please provide at least 20+ latest articles from the year 2020, 2021, from 2022.

Please cite this article as well

https://doi.org/10.1007/s11356-022-23238-8

4.      Method is fine for me.

5.      Please refinement the conclusion section and add more words.

6.      What are the recommendations? Please add the section.

7.      What are the future implications? Please add this section as well.

Performance evaluation of a novel bio-trickling filter for sty-2 rene waste gas treatment

Review

General comments

The study presents experimental investigations on a novel bio-trickling filter (NBTF) in regards to the removal performance of styrene. In the opinion of this reviewer, the setup proposed and the results obtained are of interest and this article definitely should be accounted. The only major revisions suggested are in regards to the justification of why this setup is novel (describe in details what is the novelty in relation to other recent literature) and giving some more details for the experimental procedure and the description of the setup.

I give some comments as follows.

More detailed comments

1.      Already in Abstract and Introduction specify clearly what is the novelty of this paper in relation to the most recent literature. What was done before in this field? What was not done? What is the added value of this work.

2.      For example, from line 82, you could add more description of what was done in this study, why this work is relevant etc.

3.      Between line 50 and 60, in my opinion the BTF technique should be described into more details. You can use a detailed drawing to show the general procedure. The transfer of gas pollutant into the liquid phase is called absorption and there are limiting steps in this approach which could be described by mathematical relations. This step is fundamental to understand the removal capacity of the system adopted.

As an example, you could refer to some relations written in the paper: J Math Chem 51, 2120–2143 (2013). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10910-013-0202-3

4.      Lines 98-99 are not clear.

5.      Same part, add more information about the filler.

6.      The daily circulating drip should be defined along with all the other terms used.

7.      In my opinion the experimental settings used in this paper are very interesting. My suggestion is to revise in the best possible way the Sections 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 to give more details of the experimental procedure. In lines 107-115, there are many components mentioned and now it is a bit difficult to understand what they do during the experiments. For example, compressed air is used for? Etc.

8.      Divide the experimental description in bullet points: step 1: ….., step 2: ….. etc.

Performance evaluation of a novel bio-trickling filter for styrene waste gas treatment

Review February 2023

General comments

Some of the comments provided were addressed. However, there are still some modifications required. The article explains results for a NBTF and the procedure used here is very interesting. However, one of the most important contribution should be that the reader would be able to replicate these experiments.

More detailed comments

1.      Section 2.3. It would be beneficial to have a photo of the equipment

2.      Line 40. Reference missing.

3.      Line 60. The sentence ” In BTF, the nutrient solution is evenly sprayed on the filler atta_ch_ed with microorganisms to form a liquid phase” is not clear.

4.      Lines 60-65. Introduce a diagram or figure to describe better the mass transfer phenomena involved and how actually the method is carried out.

5.      Section 2.6. The Inlet Load dimensions are wrong check them-

6.      Same section: use dots instead of the symbol *

7.      The NBTF technique should be described into more details. You can use a detailed drawing to show the general procedure. The transfer of gas pollutant into the liquid phase is called absorption and there are limiting steps in this approach which could be described by mathematical relations. This step is fundamental to understand the removal capacity of the system adopted. See previous comments.
