Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

The presented topic in the manuscript addresses a very important problem concerning the content and method of wastewater disposal in Southern Togo. It is related to two areas. One of them is the quality of population life and health and second is related to protection of the environment.

The structure of the manuscript contains all the elements required for publication in the selected journal and the content is in accordance with the stated theme.

The following comments propose to elaborate on the following points:

Introduction

1. Please briefly add information about Tago sanitation documents, laws and plans which are currently in force (national strategy for urban sanitation, national health development plan)?

Could you please shortly describe sanitation awareness and attitude Tago citizens. How has it changed over the years. What are the forecasts for the future?

2. What is the involvement of international organisations in solving the problem of sanitation?

(e.g. the documents: a) Africa water vision for 2025: equitable and sustainable use of water for socioeconomic development, b) United Nations Environment Programme African Development Bank GRID-Arendal,2020 )

3. Please also mention what regulatory requirements are used to maintain good quality water for crop irrigation.

Results

In order to better illustrate the quality of the analysed wastewater samples with international requirements and standards, I propose to make a table. This table should compare the most important parameters describing the quality of the treated wastewater and the permissible limit values and indicate the data obtained for the individual wastewater samples.

Conclusions

Could you briefly describe the proposed short term and long term solutions to effectively improve the sanitation situation in the investigated locations.

Sincerely,

Reviewer

Dear authors,

The topic is very important specially in the developing countries and the need for achieving the sustainable development goals.

The are some comments that should be considered before publication such as:

The abstract must be rewritten as one continuous paragraph (without writing words such as background, objective, etc.) and you should not write the reference for the analyzes, but the most important analyzes that have been performed and the most important results and what is concluded from them.

In the section Study material, please write the reason for selecting 12 samples of 24nad what is principle that you considered in the places of collecting samples? In the other meaning, are the samples collected randomly?

How you collect the samples? What are the conditions of sampling in bottles?

Figure 3 is missing the number 3

In each analysis, please write the instrument model and manufacturing country

There are no details about the household survey and its questionnaire, the details are required in the material and methods section

Under Table 1, you mentioned “Anova comparison model value” and you didn’t write anything about this test in the material and method. As well, the meaning of * is not clear

In Table 2, p value is repeated in table 1 please delete it from table 2

The value in table 2 represent average ± what? Please write this and if it SD some of its values are very high please review it

It is better to combine table 1 and table 2 in one table with descriptive statistical analysis as in one table and add one column in each parameter to determine the highest and lowest sample number

In presenting the results you sometime write the highest and lowest value and the sample number and sometimes you are not, please unify in all parameters

In the tables you wrote EU1-12, while in the figures you wrote the samples name, please unify.

Most of the references are old please update the references.

My best regards
