Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In our Special Issue on “Global and Local Scale Symmetry in Gravitation and Cosmology” we will review formulations and applications of scale invariance (or “Wely” invariance) in both its global and local forms, and these will be considered in relation to gravitational theories and their cosmological consequences. Among the subjects of interest are the relation of global scale invariance and the appearance of flat potentials, useful in the inflationary phase of the early universe and the late time accelerated expansion of the univese; the importance of scale invariance for the elimination of the 5-th force problem in scalar field-driven late universe scenarios; the relevance of scale invariance in inflation; and the use of local scale invariance to address important questions in gravitation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

First, we propose a scale-invariant modified gravity interacting with a neutral scalar inflaton and a Higgs-like S U ( 2 ) × U ( 1 ) iso-doublet scalar field based on the formalism of non-Riemannian (metric-independent) spacetime volume-elements. This model describes, in the physical Einstein frame, a quintessential inflationary scenario driven by the “inflaton” together with the gravity-“inflaton” assisted dynamical spontaneous S U ( 2 ) × U ( 1 ) symmetry breaking in the post-inflationary universe, whereas the S U ( 2 ) × U ( 1 ) symmetry remains intact in the inflationary epoch. Next, we find the explicit representation of the latter quintessential inflationary model with a dynamical Higgs effect as an Eddington-type purely affine gravity. Full article

In a recent work, we demonstrated that a modified gravity model in which a scalar “darkon” field is coupled to both the standard Riemannian metric and to another non-Riemannian volume form is compatible with observational data from Supernovae Type Ia. Here, we investigate a more complicated model with an additional “inflaton” scalar field. We demonstrate numerically that the model can qualitatively reproduce the Universe inflation epoch, matter dominated epoch, and present accelerating expansion in a seamless way. We show that such solutions occur only when the model parameters are within a very particular range. The main numerical problem we are faced with is reproducing the extremely small time of the inflation epoch. Here, we present how the variation of some parameters affects this time. Full article
