Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The scope of this Special Issue is dedicated to exploring the role played by knowledge management in business development in the context of the knowledge economy. Knowledge has become, in recent decades, a strategic resource that is crucial when it comes to developing dynamic capabilities and achieving a competitive advantage. Knowledge-intensive businesses have almost had an exponential evolution in the last years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Managing uncertainty as a result of knowledge absence is based on the capacity of knowledge management to create new knowledge and to share it in an intra-organizational and an inter-organizational stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship. Business development is strongly dependent on efficient knowledge management systems and knowledge strategies. The purpose of the present Special Issue is to reveal the dynamics between knowledge management and business development, and to explore new ideas, theories, models, strategies and practical lessons which can be implemented by companies to increase their competitiveness and value creation for society. At the same time, they will contribute to the advancement of the knowledge foundations of business management and creating “wise” companies, as described by Ikujiro Nonaka and Takeuchi Hirotaka. The suggested topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Knowledge management capacity to influence business development and entrepreneurship.
  • Knowledge management in times of crises and lessons learned for business development from the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • New models for knowledge dynamics which can explore knowledge management systems beyond the models created by Ikujiro Nonaka and his colleagues.
  • Knowledge dynamics and its role in developind dynamic capabilities and achieving a competitive advantage.
  • Knowledge dynamics and its importance in business decision-making.
  • Knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and business innovation.

Traditionally, corporations obtain competitive information via marketing reports, trade journals, newspapers, and competitors’ websites. That information was secondary and limited. With the widespread usage of Web 2.0 technologies, social media platforms (SMPs) are used by micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to search for information about their customers, competitors, and markets. SMEs are the engine of economic growth and effective solution to poverty and unemployment. There is also a growing use of SMPs to facilitate knowledge sharing, which leads to developing new ideas and sharing new knowledge, boosting creativity and efficiency, and assisting in achieving goals. This study aims to examine the effect of those uses of SMPs on Saudi SMEs’ performance growth and profitability through innovation. To evaluate 220 valid online questionnaire responses, we used SmartPLS 4 through a PLS-based structural equation model. The results show the positive direct effect of using SMPs for customer information and knowledge sharing on SME innovation in emerging economies and the indirect effect of those uses on SME performance growth and profitability. As a result, Saudi SME decision makers are advised to improve their effectiveness in using SMPs to acquire customer information and use it for knowledge sharing because those uses will positively influence innovation and increase SME growth and profitability. The role of spirituality in organizations has received increasing attention over recent years. The purpose of this conceptual paper is to take up this shift and develop the foundations for an alternative approach to knowledge management: Spiritual Knowledge Management. A key question in spirituality concerns the unfolding of the identity (of an organization) or the self toward a “higher end” or purpose. We propose the concept of the phronetically enacted self (understood here both in an individual and an organizational sense) that helps us conceive of how this unfolding can be achieved in a thriving and sustainable manner. The self is conceptualized as a highly dynamic and emergent “entity” that is grounded in a continuous process of becoming and of transitions transforming a state of potentiality into a state of actuality and fulfillment. Insights from the theory of spirituality, enactive cognitive science, the theory of potentials/possibility studies, phronetic organizations, and resonance theory lead us to a novel understanding of knowledge-driven organizations embodying a spirituality-based and, as a consequence, (regenerative) sustainable approach. Finally, we will develop the basic characteristics and leverage points for transformative shifts toward sustainability in organizations. Full article

Knowledge plays a pivotal role as a strategic asset for organizations that aim to improve and sustain competitive advantage. Despite the implementation of knowledge management systems to promote knowledge sharing, many employees exhibit knowledge-hiding behavior, deliberately withholding crucial information in the workplace. In this context, the current study aims to investigate the impact of knowledge-hiding behavior on entrepreneurial orientation (EO) within organizations. Specifically, we seek to explore how knowledge hiding influences employees’ inclination towards entrepreneurial behaviors such as innovation, risk-taking, and proactiveness. By examining the potential negative effects of knowledge hiding on entrepreneurial behaviors, we aim to identify barriers to innovation and risk taking in organizations. Furthermore, we examine the mediating role of factual autonomy in the relationship between knowledge hiding and entrepreneurial orientation. Understanding the mediating role of factual autonomy can provide valuable insights into the mechanisms through which knowledge hiding impacts entrepreneurial behavior. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the impact of knowledge hiding on organizational-level outcomes, specifically entrepreneurial orientation, and job autonomy. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted a cross-sectional multilevel study involving 214 employees from 16 different companies in the Romanian business sector, including telecom, banking, retail, services, and IT&C. Our findings reveal that knowledge hiding has a significant impact on job autonomy and entrepreneurial orientation. The proposed model accounted for 45.9% of the variance in entrepreneurial orientation and 37.7% of the variance in job autonomy. These results have important implications for both theory and practice, highlighting the need for further exploration into how knowledge hiding impacts different aspects of organizational work design. The present examination serves as a valuable research platform for understanding the multidimensional irregularities within organizations and highlights the importance of addressing knowledge hiding behavior to foster a culture of innovation and risk-taking in organizations. The knowledge-sharing process in digital startups is under development in current discussions, even though its importance for sustainable economic growth is acknowledged. This paper analyses the connections and traits regarding how knowledge is distinguished and shared at different levels in an emerging economy. Twelve focus groups were conducted with 72 startup founders, managers, and employees, and in-depth interviews reveal that, in contrast to the results from studies about more extensive firms, individuals consider knowledge sharing based on their particular judgment of the absorptive capacity of the recipient and the perceived gains associated with the maturation of individual and organisational image and reputation. Digital cultural factors inherent in this type of enterprise, remote first, meritocracy, and online community participation, have directly influenced the adoption of digital knowledge-sharing systems. Individuals desire to share knowledge for recognition, to establish credibility, and to establish connections with investors and mentors. A communal and collaborative atmosphere can foster the exchange of information among employees, influencing the intention to share knowledge. Knowledge sharing is reinforced when employees perceive knowledge sharers as specialists. Incentives and intra-organisational reward campaigns, talent improvement programs, external training sessions, workshops, and collaborative team assessments can cultivate personal relationships. A theoretical framework has been proposed that can examine digital startups’ effectiveness on micro-level elements. In emerging economies, social rewards are personally more critical than financial achievements. Our empirical statements reinforce the arguments that the digital age, the pandemic, and the migration crisis have substantially changed most aspects of knowledge sharing. Full article

By drawing on ecosystem and innovation-driven development theories, the aim of this paper is to increase our understanding of their application to think tanks. The composition, structure, and features of the knowledge service ecosystem of think tanks are conceptualized via a literature review. The model developed from this was validated by analyzing the data collected from 25 think tanks in the United States (US). The model constructed provides a reference for the sustainable and healthy development of knowledge services in think tanks and an innovation-driven development perspective for researchers interested in their innovation ecosystem dynamics. The intake of talent forms a necessary part of think tank construction, but, more importantly, this continuous intake is a crucial driving force for their sustainable development. This paper suggests that an increasing focus on talents in knowledge service ecosystems can lead to and assist in establishing innovative think tanks in many countries. Full article

While making an appeal to the social exchange theory, self-determination theory and the uses and gratification theory of motivation, the study seeks to investigate the efficacy of social media platforms in promoting knowledge sharing in contemporary times, which are marked by widespread digital transformation and knowledge-driven governance. Through a PLS-based structural equation modelling performed on a dataset obtained from 450 business professionals working at disparate managerial levels in diverse organizations and institutions, it has been found that the use of social media platforms significantly amplifies knowledge sharing. It has further been discovered that the efficacy of social media platforms in maturing knowledge sharing increases both with the elevation of motivation to share knowledge and the motivation to use social media. The study is one that offers rich theory-laden conceptualization and/or explanation grounded in diverse sets of theories encompassing individual as well as collective social and behavioral antecedents and contingencies of technology–human interaction dynamics regarding knowledge sharing in virtual environments, besides offering useful insights to researchers and practitioners alike to help them better understand and/or manage knowledge sharing through social media platforms. Over time, the concept of sustainable development may transform into a business practice that mandates organizations to contemplate the interconnectedness between economic, social, and environmental factors. For organizations to grow in a competitive market, they should adopt cohesive policies founded on reliable sustainability strategies and combine this with efficient knowledge sharing. This approach supports an organization’s growth and enhances its social reputation. That is, these elements may be considered important for an organization’s growth in a competitive market. Building upon this context, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the structural correlations between organizational sustainability policies, supplier sustainability, online knowledge sharing, and external factors that encourage sustainable practices. This study’s originality and novelty lie in its proposal of a conceptual model that connects all these factors within a coherent framework, thus extending the existing literature on this topic. Our results confirm that external factors have a positive relationship with sustainability policies and that sustainability policies positively impact supplier sustainability and online knowledge sharing. We emphasize the importance of considering internal and external factors when implementing sustainable procedures and the need for authentic communication with stakeholders to integrate sustainable practices successfully. The findings can assist managers in comprehending the factors that impact a company’s sustainability strategies and in adapting policies to address environmental and social concerns. Full article

According to the literature, in traditional business settings, intellectual capital (IC) and knowledge sharing (KS) significantly contribute to increasing organizational innovation (OI) levels. During COVID-19, the environment transformed, which presents numerous obstacles that necessitate creative and innovative thinking. Here, the researchers wondered if the same phenomenon would occur in the university sector and whether the coronavirus pandemic would have an impact on it. Therefore, this paper aimed to conduct an empirical research study to investigate this. The study followed a quantitative research approach to collect data, which was based on an electronic structured questionnaire survey. In addition, a purposive random sampling technique included 407 academics employed by Palestinian universities in the West Bank area. For data analysis, the SPSS v25 program was employed, while a mediation analysis was carried out using the Process Macro v3.5 software. The research results showed that IC significantly contributes to promoting knowledge sharing and raising OI levels, and KS had a beneficial impact on OI. In the end, it was discovered that KS positively mediated the relationship between IC and OI. Despite some limitations, the study’s findings offer numerous advantages for academics, researchers, and policymakers in universities. Full article

Taxes are imperative for the economy and businesses for better growth and development. Understanding the taxes and having the right approach towards them can make a vast difference between the success and failure of businesses. Therefore, the present paper aims to examine the impact of tax knowledge on business performance. The study is based on the primary survey of 450 registered Indian MSMEs. The empirical findings from the Partial Least Square Structure Equation Modeling highlight that tax knowledge enhanced operational efficiency and prevented firms from tax fraud. In addition, the technological advancement in the tax system and its knowledge led to proper tax administration and governance by firms which enhanced their productivity. The results may prove beneficial for policymakers, governments, and businesses because in-depth tax knowledge would lead to timely tax compliance and reduced tax evasion, avoidance, and scams. The COVID-19 global pandemic has caused an unprecedented disturbance in higher education and the business services sector. In the 2014–2020 financial perspective, the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development has constituted a response to challenges and an instrument to execute the Europe 2020 Strategy. However, the Programme was not designed to prevent crises, and neither did it foresee the pandemic which surprised the whole world. Despite this, higher education institutions that implemented projects co-financed with the EU funds had to face the “black swan” and ensure the continuity of their activities while improving their resilience to crises. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how important knowledge management and resilience-building skills are for students to adapt and grow stronger in the face of a crisis. Does higher education teach crisis-resistant competences? As we know from practice and literature, the knowledge gap as regards crisis-resistant competencies is enormous, and the relevant university programmes require strengthening. Therefore, we conducted a literature review about knowledge management in complex crises and conducted research to identify competences that increase resilience to crises. The aim of the article was to examine to what extent the support implemented in the Polish university project contributed to the increase in indicators (output, direct result) and to what extent the level of competences of the project participants increased, including those competences that allowed the participants to adapt to the labour market during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the needs of the study, we used the competence balance method and the measurement of a degree of ratio implementation according to the criteria applied. The results of the study proved that the ratios rose and the project contributed to increasing competences in the project’s participants, improving their crisis resilience. The conclusions of the study allowed us to make recommendations regarding the emergent knowledge strategies about the European Union’s future agenda as well as about knowledge management and university training programs for resilient skills. The present paper sets out to investigate the relationships among several key constructs that cover the work patterns and processes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasis is laid on the leader-team communication, the fostering of a strong team culture, team performance and satisfaction with teamwork in the case of virtual teams. The scrutiny is intended to complement recent developments in the field which compared traditional and virtual teams at different levels by adding knowledge to virtual teams’ communication and interaction patterns and processes. In this vein, an online survey was conducted with 175 members from different virtual teams. The findings showed the advancement of a pertinent conceptual model, mostly displaying significant relationships among constructs. Four out of the five formulated hypotheses were validated, the highest influences being reported between leader-team communication and team culture, respectively, and between team performance and satisfaction with teamwork. Furthermore, the structural model explained over 50% of the variance in the satisfaction with teamwork, thus supporting the relevance of the inferred relationships. Full article

The purpose of the study is to investigate the role that knowledge creation and knowledge transfer processes play in family firm intergenerational succession in Thailand. An exploratory qualitative case study approach is used. Interviews were conducted with successors and predecessors of small, medium and large Thai firms that have undergone leadership succession within the past five years (30 firms, for n = 60 interviews). Data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis approach. There were 16 different knowledge approaches identified that are undertaken by the successor. These processes are commonplace to firms, including formal and informal, internal and external processes of knowledge creation and transfer. Most of these occur at different stages of preparation for succession (pre-succession, transition and succession stages). While some knowledge approaches are used across firms, others are specific to small or large firms. These knowledge approaches and stages were used to develop a knowledge process model for family firm succession. The research develops an original model of the knowledge processes associated with family firm succession. This model, which incorporates a staged succession model with the knowledge processes identified, explains how and why knowledge creation and transfer occur during the succession process. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of the knowledge management process as a mediating variable in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance. This study employed a quantitative method and utilised a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 350 data were collected from the owners/founders of online businesses. A Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) analysis was performed to test the proposed hypotheses of the study. The findings indicated that entrepreneurial orientation positively the knowledge management process, which in turn exerts a positive effect on the organizational performance of a company. Additionally, the indirect effect analysis revealed that the knowledge management process plays a significant role as a mediator between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance. The research fills a gap in the literature by considering a mediating variable in enhancing the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance. This research also provides a particular contribution to the literature and some suggestions for future research. Full article

Most recently, there has been a growing interest in understanding the correlation concerning knowledge management and competitiveness more so in the area of tourism. Hence, this paper looks to provide a synthesis on theoretical nexus of knowledge management and tourism business enterprise competitiveness by giving an integrated overview of four micro economic related theories that influence competitiveness and knowledge management. These theories were examined to exhibit the extent of their applicability to tourism businesses as a way to alleviate challenges posed by susceptibility, complexity, ambiguity, uncertainty, and volatility brought about by market liberalization and globalization. Moreover, theories are, considered a set of systematic hunches, which have multiple parts, which play a role in the overall idea of what exactly a theory is proposing. During the review of literature various theories assert to explain knowledge management and competitiveness individually, but on some occasions in relation either to organizational learning or organizational (quality) culture. Thus, the need to supply an integrated overview of the theoretical nexus between these concepts by exploring the theoretical frameworks and related facets. Of the micro-economic theories: the institutional theory, the knowledge-based theory, the resource-based theory, and the (dynamic) capabilities theory were used to guide and try to explain the relationship of aforementioned facets. The knowledge-based theory posits that an organization’s competitive gain stems from the distinctive knowledge assets along with its ability to effectively utilize and share these assets within the organization. The resource-based theory, conversely, emphasizes the role of physical and intangible resources in determining an organization’s competitiveness. The (dynamic) capabilities theory underscores the importance of an enterprise’s ability to continuously learn, adapt, as well as innovate to sustain a competitiveness. Finally, institutional theory highlights the role of external factors, such as business standards, industrial policies and procedures such as quality approaches, in shaping an organization’s competitiveness. Overall, with the comprehensive perception of the given theories the paper attempts to feature the correlation between knowledge management and competitiveness within the tourism industry. Highlighting ways in which these theories can be integrated to supply a more holistic understanding of this relationship especially in the study areas of tourism managerial micro-economics, tourism competitiveness and organizational knowledge management aimed at impending application in particular to enhance the sustainability tourism business enterprises.
