Dear Colleagues,

We invite papers for the Special Issue: “Entrepreneurship, Technology Revolution and Sustainability”

The Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR or Industry 5.0) is predicted to herald an era of synergy between technology, humans, and the environment. With greater collaboration between these arenas, the world can hope for a prosperous future while simultaneously ensuring the wellbeing of the planet. This raises a salient question. How can such equilibrium be reached and what are the drivers of human–technology harmony that is also cognizant of the well-being of multiple stakeholders?  Thus, the Special Issue seeks to engage scholars in conversations around attaining sustainability agendas via technology and entrepreneurialism (Salimath, 2018; Salimath and Carter, 2014)

We have witnessed technology revolutions fundamentally transforming the technology landscape. New technologies, such as Internet of Things, robotics, green energy, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence are creating new opportunities and challenges for human enterprise and the environment.  The United Nations recognized the primary role of technology in achieving its sustainable development goals (SDG) by 2030. Yet, extant literature in this area is scant, giving scope for future research questions in this interface. How can we shape and apply the technological revolutions to achieve sustainability goals? What mechanisms can entrepreneurs use to channel new technologies to bring them to market, and to harness them towards sustainable practices? What role do countries and urban–rural environments play and do they constrain or encourage such practices? How do regulatory environments and policies affect these outcomes?  How salient are norms and social values in this context? Scholars can leverage a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives to address these gaps and more (Salimath and Chandna, 2021; Salimath and Jones, 2011; Salimath and Chandna, 2019)

We welcome insightful explorations at the intersection of technology revolution, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. Papers can be conceptual, theoretical, or empirical, and can include literature reviews and meta analyses. Submissions are encouraged from a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, management, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, entrepreneurship, innovation studies, transitions, public policy, and related areas. Interdisciplinary perspectives and multi-level explorations are also well suited to the aims of the Special Issue.

The Special Issue will contribute by adding new research to the literature on sustainability, technology revolutions, and entrepreneurship. The focus on a niche area will offer practical guidance on achieving large scale change in sustainable goals via entrepreneurialism and harnessing technology.

Potential topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Technological and entrepreneurial predictors of sustainability;
  • Interlinkages/synergies between humans, technology and sustainability;
  • Challenges/opportunities at the nexus of technology, entrepreneurship and sustainability;
  • Shaping technology trajectories for sustainable outcomes;
  • Ethical consequences of technological revolutions for sustainability;
  • Entrepreneurialism and environmental activism;
  • Unintended consequences of technological revolutions;
  • Potential pitfalls;
  • Stakeholder involvement;
  • Sustainable entrepreneurship;
  • Transitions to new sustainability regimes;
  • Sustainable technology;
  • Rural-urban contexts;
  • Regulatory policies.

As the road to environmental and social sustainability is tied to large-scale systemic transitions, inevitably, sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship should be considered in their context. In this paper, we investigate how entrepreneurial opportunities develop in trajectories of sectoral transitions to sustainability. We adopt a social practice perspective and, based on insights from sectoral systems of innovation, socio-technical systems and activity theory, we develop an activity-based template/framework to represent sectors and their inherent dynamics in a structured and holistic way. The framework allows for the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities in the contradictions that emerge during transitions in the activities of sectors due to internally developed inconsistencies and/or external interventions. Hence, plausible narratives of the anticipated business futures can be constructed. It also surfaces the role of learning and knowledge creation, i.e., innovation, in resolving contradictions, thus creating value and stirring transitions in the direction of sustainability. The case study of the transition of the automobility sector to sustainability is used to test the framework proposed. Full article
