Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

One of the most challenging problems facing the world today is the ever-growing mountain of waste, whether it is land pollution from overflowing landfills or water pollution from marine litter. Our trash catastrophe is more than just an environmental issue; it also threatens to harm some of the world's poorer nations. Waste and the pollutants produce can leak into ground water and enter rivers. In many cases, it can also result in flooding because tonnes of rubbish can clog drains and contaminate the air with toxic waste discharges. Biotechnology has applications in environmental management and medicine. One of the most promising uses of biotechnology is actually waste management. Biotechnological processes are used for wastewater treatment, disposal of solid wastes and gas treatment in environmental engineering. Also, these processes can be utilized for the biogas and hydrogen production of as new energy resources. However, currently, biotechnological process faces many hardships, mostly related to feedstock and/or capital costs, which obstructs further development and advancement. Most of the issues related to the utilization of waste indicate a need to explore new pathways or processes for different applications to address the aforementioned issues. The waste materials can undergo chemical or physical modification to be applied in different applications or processes. The application of biotechnology in waste management is very important in view of its economic and environmental benefits.

This special issue aims to advance sustainable biotechnology in use of waste management. In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
