Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Since the industrial revolution, the extensive mining and use of fossil fuels has massively increased the concentration of greenhouse gases. By 2020, the global CO2 emissions remained at 31.5 Gt/a, and the atmospheric CO2 concentration reached the highest ever annual average of 412.5 ppm, which was much higher than that before the industrial revolution (280 ppm). The global warming caused by the emission of greenhouse gases has resulted in frequent natural disasters and caused huge crises in the ecological and living environment, which must be considered at a global scale. The CO2 emitted by industrial plants, including coal-fired power, steel-iron smelting and cement production, is the largest contributor to total emissions and the most concentrated artificial source of greenhouse gases. In the short-to-mid-term, the CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) strategy has been considered the most effective way to mitigate the industrial CO2 emission. Furthermore, with the coupling of biomass energy, the “Zero Carbon” and even the “Negative Carbon” emission targets could be also realized. Therefore, efficient and economic technologies, focusing on the Bio-Energy and CO2 Capture and Utilization storage (BE&CCU), have been eagerly desired for the sustainable low-carbon development.

This Special Issue aims to collect the most updated advances in BE&CCU technologies, with a focus on the novel synthesis route of adsorbents and catalysts, the solid waste-derived materials for BE&CCU, the economic and efficient chemical conversion process and equipment, the techno-economic models and evaluation, and the life-cycle assessment and policy management for BE&CCU.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

(1) Biomass energy (thermochemical conversion of biomass; catalytic conversion of biomass; high added-value biomass utilization and process).

(2) CO2 capture (pre-combustion capture; post-combustion capture; oxy-fuel combustion; direct air capture).

(3) CO2 utilization and conversion (electrochemical and photo-electrochemical conversion of CO2; heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic reactions involving CO2; integrated processes for CO2 conversion and reduction).
