Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues:

Currently, global energy consumption is increasing due to population expansion and the rapid growth of the industrial sector. Existing fossil fuels (crude oil, coal, and gas) have reached the decline phase and are unable to meet the global fuel demand; additionally, high consumption leads to the release of different toxic pollutants into the environment and, therefore, are unable to meet stringent air/water quality limitations set by environmental protection agencies. The need for renewable energy to achieve sustainable growth is the key to control the carbondioxide level in the environment. Solar cells, wind energy, and biohydrogen have been identified as the ecofriendly renewable energy sources for sustainable development. Recently, researchers have focused on biofuel from different sources to meet the domestic and industrial energy demands. Biohydrogen production from different bioresources (microalgae and macroalgae) using microorganisms is the promising technology for clean energy production. Biohydrogen production is executed by biophotolysis with the support of light and dark fermentation without light support and microbial fuel cells. Biohydrogen possess a high-energy value in comparison with wind and solar energy, as well as the high storage capacity of energy compared to coal and gasoline. Present day research studies are focused on the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment coupled with bioenergy (biohydrogen/bioelectricity) production using potential bacterial strains. The current Special Issue will mainly focus on the bioenergy production to discover the interesting novel technologies involved in bioenergy production from different bioresources and waste using microorganisms. The Special Issue is mainly interested in high-quality research articles and critical review articles related to the following themes:

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Bioenergy production from domestic and industrial wastewater;
  • Bioenergy production technologies;
  • Conversion of waste to bioenergy production;
  • Anaerobic digestion;
  • Bioresources for bioenergy production;
  • Biohydrogen production from macroalgae and microalgae;
  • Pretreatment methods for enhanced energy production;
  • Novel catalyst and biocatalyst for bioenergy production;
  • Microbial Fuel Cell for wastewater treatment and energy production;
  • Production of biofuel (biohydrogen/biomethane) from cost effective industrial waste;
  • Use of bioenergy to control pollution;
  • Environment impact assessment on application of bioenergy as alternate for fossil fuels;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
