Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is dedicated to the socio-economic and institutional challenges encountered when implementing the European Green Deal strategy, particularly in EU member states. The European Commission aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and is dealing with the socio-economic consequences of this transformation. Climate neutrality can be considered a key lever in a broader strategy to modernize economic growth, but socio-economic and institutional challenges (such as the shadow economy) are significant barriers to implementing this strategy.

It is believed that between now and 2050, the global energy sector will require huge investments, i.e., tens to hundreds of trillions of dollars. Such a high amount of funds is dedicated to necessary reforms arising from numerous socio-economic and institutional challenges, which are rarely considered by scientists in the existing literature. The major purpose of the Special Issue is to investigate how socio-economic and institutional environment in EU countries impacts the implementation of the European Green Deal strategy and define recommendations to European governments to overcome socio-economic and institutional problems during implementation. Solving this problem will enable us to achieve sustainable development.

This Special Issue will complement the theory of sustainability research, emphasizing the significance of socio-economic and institutional environment for the sustainable implementation of the European Green Deal.
