Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Guest Editor is glad to invite authors to participate in a Special Issue of Sustainability entitled “Renewable Energies and Small-Scale Combined Heat and Power Applications for Agro-Industry”.

At present, the efficient exploitation of renewable sources and the development of innovative energy systems represent the cornerstones for promoting a faster and softer transition from fossil fuels and traditional technologies towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. In this framework, combined heat and power (CHP) systems offer multiple benefits owing to the improved energy efficiency and the decrease in the primary energy supply and costs. Furthermore, the distributed small-scale CHP production from renewables represents a fundamental factor to decrease energy transmission losses and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—especially in the agro-industrial sector, which presents some of the most GHG-emission-intensive products and highest energy costs. Nevertheless, there are few studies in the literature and further investigations are necessary.

This Special Issue aims to provide a forum for information and discussion on recent advances in the area of renewable energies and small-scale CHP applications, promoting their development and faster dissemination in the agro-industry sector. Articles presenting original results and case studies are particularly encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Renewable sources for agro-industry;
  • Cogeneration in the agro-industrial sector;
  • Distributed and small-scale energy production;
  • Trigeneration and polygeneration;
  • Integrated multi-source energy systems;
  • Assessment of environmental impacts of the agro-industrial sector;
  • Innovative solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Numerical and experimental investigations on small-scale CHP;
  • Review and economic studies on energy consumption in agro-industry;
  • Case studies and best practices;
  • Policy development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
