Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are witnessing the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and it influence in business and society. AI has penetrated almost every aspect of our lives, directly or indirectly.  In some sense, it has become a disruptive technology that threatens the old ways of doing things, from daily activities through smartphones and social media to transportation, health, education, management, decision-making and many more. For example, natural language processing and machine learning are advancing to the state that computer-generated speech is very close to human speech, and expert systems are highly regarded in businesses.

We are also witnessing businesses and societies adopting digital transformations, where the digitalization of business processes to improve customer experience is the focus. Digital transformation in businesses and societies was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as social or physical distance had to be accompanied by digital closeness. The use of smartphones to monitor the virus was a necessity, and advanced digital technologies should be incorporated into health monitoring applications (apps) that are run using smartphones. In reality, people are ready to be reached digitally through their smartphones or wearable devices, such as watches, glasses, hats, earphones, or even shoes. It is organizations that need to redesign their ways to effectively and efficiently reach people for mutual benefits.

Unlike the old approaches to developing digital processes or computerization, where inside-out is the driving force, digital transformation is different, when the driving force is outside-in, focusing on digitalization and improving conditions for stakeholders, especially user or customer experiences.  The role of AI in digital transformations is obvious. It can help improve users’, customers’; or people's experience generally when they interact with digital interfaces by creating enjoyable or satisfying experiences.

This Special Issue aims to focus on important issues of the advancement or applications of AI in businesses and societies, especially regarding the roles of AI in their digital transformation.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • AI and business sustainability;
  • Disruptive innovation of AI;
  • Digital transformation of organizations;
  • Managing digital transformation;
  • AI and digital transformation;
  • Digital business ecosystems;
  • Digital twins;
  • Digital transformation issues;
  • AI and/or digital transformation in business and management;
  • AI and/or digital transformation in education;
  • AI and/or digital transformation in healthcare;
  • The impact of AI and/or digital transformation in society.

A Synthetic Review on Enterprise Digital Transformation: A Bibliometric Analysis

The digital transformation of enterprises has become an inevitable trend. Conducting a bibliometric analysis of the literature on the digital transformation of enterprises and exploring the current status of digital transformation will provide valuable references and suggestions for enterprises. Both bibliometric analysis and literature review methods are utilized in this study. Among the bibliometric analysis tools are HistCite and CiteSpace. This study finds that Parida V and Technology Forecasting and Social Change are the most prolific authors and journals on enterprise digital transformation, respectively. The USA has the most publications, and Copenhagen Business School is the most influential institution. Three stages are shown by the citation mapping: the budding stage (before 2014), the system formation stage (2015–2019), and the diversified development stage (2020–present). Based on keyword co-occurrence analysis and emergent keyword analysis, this study constructs a conceptual framework for enterprise digital transformation in four aspects: digital technology adoption, digital dynamic capabilities, digital innovation orientation, and digital transformation performance. This study provides a systematic overview of enterprise digital transformation research, establishes a conceptual framework for enterprise digital transformation, and provides certain theoretical insights to steer corresponding practical activities. Government Attention, Market Competition and Firm Digital Transformation

Clarifying the driving factors of enterprise digital transformation can help us understand the real driving forces of industrial digitization and digital industrialization, improve the implementation of industrial policies, and narrow the digital divide between different regions and firms to facilitate high-quality and sustainable development. Based on 38,891 news items from provincial and municipal governments in China, this paper uses text analysis to depict the government’s attention to the digital economy and explore the influencing factors driving digital transformation. In the empirical analysis, government attention to the digital economy positively impacts enterprise digital transformation primarily through fiscal expenditures on science and technology, the digital economy level, the digital financial inclusion level, industrial agglomeration, and firm nature. The positive impact of market competition on enterprise digital transformation is significant for small-scale firms. The insight from this finding is that enterprise digital transformation cannot be solved entirely by market forces but also needs to be led by digital industrial policies with government attention.
